Archive footage of Diana driving her Metro. It was the car she owned around the time she entered the public eye and began her relationship with Prince Charles (they became officially engaged in 1981). I'm sure he later bought her some nicer cars, including a red Mercedes 500SL. -- Last edit: 2010-06-13 00:41:49 |

Yes, i know the 500 your talking about, unfortunately for her, the government didn't like her driving a Foreign car so she returned it. It is now in the Mercedes-Benz Museum, Stuttgart. -- Last edit: 2007-10-29 13:23:11 (G-MANN) |

I saw a photo gallery of that museum yesterday, here: http://www.dazultra.co.uk/eurotrip/070307.htm I do like the colour of that Merc, still a nice car. It's stupid that the government said she couldn't have a foreign car, I'm not sure I not totally believe that, I'm not calling you a liar but that bit of information doesn't sound believable, it would have been her private car, not something used for state occaissions. Charles bought William a VW Golf when he passed his driving test, so why would Diana have had to give up her Merc? -- Last edit: 2007-09-13 20:12:35 |

On this page http://www.angelfire.com/retro/minimetroland/id11.html is a picture of Diana's Metro (the creator of the site insists it's her). The registration doesn't seem to check on the DVLA page but it looks like a W-reg (August 1980 – July 1981). You can see the car's numberplate on the main image on this page, but it's hard to see what it says. About the Metro, I believe it started off being called the Austin Mini Metro (or Minimetro), did it retain this name until it became a Rover or was the "Mini" part of the name dropped after a few years? -- Last edit: 2007-09-13 23:08:16 |

As I remember, yes, it was originally called Austin Mini Metro, because it was intended to replace the Mini. However, it didn't, because the demand for the Mini didn't diMinish ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Metro -- Last edit: 2007-10-29 13:23:00 (G-MANN) |

Metro-Cammell objected to Austin's use of the Metro name so initially it was called Mini Metro. Very soon (within eighteen months probably) the Mini was dropped and it was just Austin Metro. |

"IN DECEMBER 1991 LADY DIANA TOOK DELIVERY OF THIS MERCEDES-BENZ 500SL. THE WIFE OF THE PRINCE OF WALES THUS BECAME THE FIRST MEMBER OF THE ROYAL HOUSE TO DRIVE A FOREIGN CAR PRIVATELY. IN RESPONSE TO CRITICISM FROM THE GOVERNMENT, THE TRADE UNIONS AND INDUSTRY, LADY DI RETURNED THE COMFORTABLE AND POWERFUL SPORTS CAR IN SEPTEMBER 1992" From the Mercedes-Benz Museum website. G-MANN, visit it here, it's quite good: http://www.museum-mercedes-benz.com/ Diana's Merc is on C4, which is selectable on the right hand side of the page. |
