Between the series run, the feature film and this TV-movie...can there be any 69 Chargers left? |
◊ 2007-03-10 09:47 |
Just as well Chrysler made nearly 90,000 69 Chargers. Add a few of the 96,000 68's and 50,000 70's, but how many are left now to destroy. Just think of all the 68-70 Chargers wrecked in movies - Bullitt, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, The Fast and the Furious, the list goes on for wrecked 68-70's. And don't forget the other Dukes of Hazzard TV movie -- Last edit: 2007-03-10 09:48:48 |

They probably just used kit/replica cars for the stunts. I don't think a TV movie production would afford to use real Chargers. |

The "birth" of the general lee was different in the tv show. It started out as a black Charger thst was used by bank robbers who crashed it or something like that. |

Yeah, and the black Charger was a base model with a bench seat and column shift automatic. The robbers wrecked it and the Duke boys bought the car from the junkyard. The robbers hid diamonds (I think) in the glovebox and they went after the Dukes to get the diamonds. That was a pretty cool episode. |

As far as I know, there are no companies making replica dodge chargers, as the charger did not share any panels with any other dodge of the era, and they were built as uni-bodies (e.g. the frame rails are part of the body shell - no seperate chassis) so the only way to make a replica dodge charger would be to buy all the reproduction parts you could, and fabricate the rest yourself. It would be cheaper to simply buy one. Ironically, a company called luedtke performance auto group claims to be the official supplier of general lees for the movie, but they are also known for buying barely running parts cars, giving them a coat of cheap orange paint and selling them as freshly restored general lees. |

All the Chargers used in the movies are real 1969 Dodge Chargers. No one makes replicas, yet. But with all the hype about the "new, reproduction" Camaros, Mustangs, Belairs, and Novas, a "new" 69 Charger can't be far behind...let's at least hope it's not far behind. And in the series, the robbers hide gold dust behind the instrument panel, the sheriff runs them into a ditch, "wrecking" the car, then "something led Bo and Luke to that Capitol City junkyard, and right up to that wreck of an old black Charger. Sounds like a song ole' Willie would sing." Oddly enough, the junkyard owner later refers to the car as a "beat up black 68 coupe, looks like it went through a meat grinder". General Lee is a 1969 Charger, not a 68. So yes, this movie's explanation of the origin of the General could be considered incorrect. |

And many other cars where destroyed |

"321 chargers were destroyed in the show and 534 police cars were destroyed" i have wondered a loooong time how many police cars were used. Some were lightly crashed, others only lost fenders or trunk lids (and roofs, of course), so i figured a lot or them were recycled.Bump one up, fix it, bump it again.I also assumed they cut up a few cars so the parts would just fall off in a comical manner and reused the cut-up cars over and over. Most were circa-1977 Furys and Monacos.Real early episodes wrecked AMC Matadors. They also re-used stock footage for a lot of the crashes. |

they used 309 to 329 Chargers in the series. |

My only question is why did they find the General in the water? Already painted. "The beginning" doesn't fit. I watched the movie a few times and it had its funny parts but all in all its nothing like the show everyone grew up with. I get the new generation thing but if they wanted to call it The dukes of hazzard then it should be based off it more than just the General. |
