Formula 400, not a Trans |

Impossible to say, since this car is customized. It has the Formula 400 as well as the Trans-Am shaker scoops! |

It is a Trans Am with a Formula hood cut for the shaker scoop. That was a big fad in the late 70's early 80's. Here is a clip of the chase at the end of the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8U5NBCRdPFw |

Trans Ams were white with blue stripes or blue with white stripes before '73. And shaker scoop is Trans equipment, Formula came with this twin scoop. |

nightrider, your comment is extremely erronious. i wish you knew what you were talking about. the first year of the trans am was 1969. it was the ONLY year of the 1st gen. trans am, which is the "white with blue stripes" year you are talking about. after that, they came in many different colors in the 2nd generation body style, until 1981. http://www.78ta.com/photohist.htm read up before you claim other people are wrong. |

Its a Trans am. Firebirds have no fender scoops and wheel flares. i believe its 1970-73 |

Incorrect. 1970 Trans Ams were only available in Polar White with blue stripes or Lucerne Blue with white stripes. 1971 and 1972 Trans Ams were only available in Cameo White with blue stripes or Lucerne Blue with white stripes. 1973 was the first year other colors were offered, just as Nightrider said. |

You go skid! I concurr! Heres few other tidbits from a poncho brain. The movie company prepaired 2 or 3 birds for this movie. The sacrifice car is most likely a T/A notice it has a rear sway bar in the roll over frame, this was standard equip on the T/A not the forumla. It is true that these cars are built from several so it is hard to tell. Notice the close up car has high back seats. these were not available in 1970 only 71 up. The close up car also has aftermarket side pipes. the roll over car is sans the pipes. The cars that werent destroyed were later used in CHiPS TV show as panch's car. |

That's interesting, where did they go for a few years before CHiPs got hold of them? Though when you say 'used as Ponch's car' as far as I remember Ponch bought the car when it had just been set on fire, got it running, then drove it perhaps twice before it was stolen and rolled over by a group of girl car theives. |

actually cycolac fan, CHiP's started in 1977 and IIRC ponch's firebird is first seen as a bad guy's car in one of the first season episodes (john is cut off by it and ends up in the hospital) which would have been early 1978 and then Ponch gets the car during season 2. so there wasn't much time if any between when they were used in Corvette Summer and repainted for CHiP's |

![]() The 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am fitted with an IIRC hood which was actually customized and built by Korky Kustom Studios for MGM. The IIRC hood is actually a combination of twin formula hood scoops and a trans am shaker. -- Last edit: 2010-05-27 23:14:41 |

These cars are 71 formula 400's! Correct info on the buckets and sway bar. 71 firebirds and formulas are unique in that this is the only year they came with gill like scoops on the lower 1/2 of the fenders, below where the air ducts on a ta's fender were located. Also the 71 formula had metal callouts "formula 400" right under these scoops.SEE =http://www.firebirdgallery.com/2nd%20Gen%20Images/71fr10.jpg. The ta callouts on 2nd gen were always decals. The 70.72,73 formulas have different callouts then the 71's. As far as the roll over car most likly being a ta? Its a formula still has the gills look at the pic of the car burning. The swaybar and the rear spoiler were not standard on the formula but were VERY commonly ordered options id say 75% I have seen over the years have the rear swaybar. |

formula 400s do not have Trans Am fender scoops |

This version Trans Am is excellent. I'm watching Corvette Summer now and forgot that this was in it. The new one for Smokey and the Bandit was probably the right choice, as it was...well, new. But man, I'd love to see this car as the top dog in a new movie. |

I love the front end on this car. It looks so mean and staunch. It's a real shame what happened to it. |
