It's an Impala. The Caprice had over-riders on the front bumper. |

Love the original pic of the Impala doing a little "Dukes-of-Hazzard" action! ![]() -- Last edit: 2009-10-24 08:19:00 |

This car was first used in episode 1.08. They used it in 9 episodes. Some episodes, it switches years between the 1972 and 1973 models. They finally destroy it in episode 1.17, but the car they destroy is actually a 1971 Impala. And yes, it is an Impala Custom. -- Last edit: 2010-04-20 23:41:08 (Neon) |

I believe it is a 1976 Mazda RX-4 2dr hardtop. The RX-4 got a facelift for 1976, and the 2dr was discontinued after that model year (It competed with the new Cosmo coupe). Compare it to the picture of a Mazda 929 hardtop of the same period. /vehicle_147361-Mazda-929-Coupe-1977.html |

Many "junker" early 1970's Chevrolet Impalas and Novas were used for Hunter at the beginning. In reality I doubt even in 1984 that the L.A. police force would have allowed most of those early "crappers" to be still be used for police business (except for maybe some Vice cops to look like low-life drug dealers). In most chases Hunter's early junkers "copped" out (pun intended ![]() I'm sure the producers looked for the worst cars they could find on whatever studio lot they filmed at--trying to find several that were identical as some would get smashed in one scene but would still be driving in the next few. However, I'm not sure that each Impala was always supposed to be the same one...as there are some noticable differences--and when one got smashed or destroyed in one episode, I think the next one in the next episode was just supposed to be another one like the previous that the first "evil" captains made Hunter use. |

At least junkers back then still looked like they had some dignity and even have a popular following years later. A twelve year-old junker today would just be completely uninteresting and unwanted for all-time. ![]() |
