Trident Venturer? |

Choices are Clipper (Ford 289 V8, about 31-35 made 1967+) or Venturer (Ford 3 litre V6, (about 31-41 made, 1969+). Not a Tycoon (TR6 2.5 six cyl, 7 made) as this was 1971+. Production ende 1972 when they went bust, although a handful of later examples trickled out, and another source says 130 Tridents made in total. Nothing found to identify visual differences - there were evolutions in wing grilles and headlight housings, and late 71 opening rear window. Script in side grille looks more like Clipper than Venturer?? Trevor Fiore (working for Fissore) did the styling originally for the TVR Trident in 1965, but they went bust, so the design was taken over by a dealer and set up as Trident. Fiore also did the Bond Equipe 2-litre, Monteverdi Hai, Alpine A310, and various things at Citroen. |

Advertising pictures showing, presumably, the same car with the same number plate - '678 BJ' (trade plate?) : ![]() ![]() |

Yes a trade plate. 678 BJ was never issued in normal series, but BJ was E Suffolk, which is where Tridents were made from 1968. Trade plates are undateable - for 1923-69 there were 2 formats with white-on-red apparently for "General" use, compared to "Limited" red-on-white. In 1970 white-on-red was dropped, leaving red-on-white for everything. So those photos were probably 1969, and I guess the film car was factory-supplied product placement. Butch tyres might mean V8 power (so another hint for Clipper?) - they'd be a bit too much for the 3-litre Venturer?? |
