Yes, my 1960 VW1200 deluxe had its fuel filler under the bonnet and no fuel gauge. There was a fuel reserve tap down by the clutch pedal, (rhd of course), which you kicked round when the car ran out of petrol. After a few coughs it would then restart, but if you were in a traffic queue you needed a good battery to pump the petrol through from the tank to the carburettor. You also needed to remember to kick the tap back into the normal position when you had filled the tank, or next time there wasn’t a reserve. |
