:king: Has second style of wheel trim = 1970-ish. Picture is flipped - bonnet badge is on wrong side.

what a lovely car. I felt in love with these understated beayties in 1979 when I first went to London. In Luton airport a metallic gold Sceptre was apparently waiting for me... but no, I had to take a bus.

My father in law bought one new in 1971 or 2, BRE215J, similar colour of metallic green to the thumb.

It rotted like a pear. Possibly because it was always covered in cow muck.

WHAT A PITY ! I am afraid the quality was not as good as the look. I have no idea because a very few were imported to Italy and I could meet just two Mk III Sceptres with Italian plate (one in silver metallic and the other in dark aqua metallic).

I drove quite a few miles in it, the performance was better than the Hunter estate cars I had from 1972 to 1977, and the interior was much nicer, but I do not think they were as good a car as the later Cortina. I had a 1979 Mk V 2litre GL estate which was, in my opinion, a much better car, but which was let down by not having an overdrive. Ford got it more correct with the five speed gearbox in the Sierra, but that was not a car I liked at all.

The type 9 box on early Sierras etc was a piece of junk, once that layshaft bearing went they squealed in every gear except 4th, I've rebuilt a few....

I see... but stylistically the Sceptre is pure beauty and late Cortinas have no appeal for me at all...!!!

Each to his own. Having driven both, I know my preference.

I really liked my dad's pair of Sceptres when I were a young lad - WYH 156H (white) and TDU 562J (Fern green metallic - as the thumb link and jfs's dad-in-law). The first car I ever drove legally on my own after passing my test was a Sierra pool car, and then had loads of them from the pool fleet and rentals, but I never really liked any of them and the early diesels were horrible. First Mondeo was much better.

A very modern door assembly in a very modern silver behind that Humber. Period-correct oops!
