Sequence in Nairobi at 13-04 - main and![]() ![]() ![]() Another sequence a couple of minutes later, somewhere near Nairobi - interesting that side profile makes roof join almost invisible ![]() ![]() ![]() Also likely to be same car seen at start of film in Mombasa ![]() ![]() ![]() There's also a big Humber in Zanzibar clips after 04-05 - if it's same/similar laundaulet it has roof closed here - the open Laundaulet in 3rd thumb is Austin Princess (separate entry) ![]() ![]() ![]() Can't find out much about Pullman Landaulets - "Seven special landaulet-bodied Humber Pullmans by Thrupp and Maberly were built to be used on a tour of the Commonwealth by King George VI of England. The tour was cancelled due to the king’s failing health ..." - http://autorestorations.co.nz/project/1949-humber-pullman-limousine/ - implying 1951-52 date. Also "The future King George VI took delivery of his first Humber in 1935. He was so impressed by the limousines that after the war he ordered 47 to be sent to British embassies around the world........ The highlights of Marshall’s collection include a Pullman Landaulette, built for King George VI (the King died before it could be delivered)" - Link to "www.dailymail.co.uk" and "This unique landaulette limousine was originally built for King George VI for his state visit to Austrailia and is the only known survivor of this very rare landaulette style coachwork by Thrupp & Maberley" - http://www.humbercarmuseum.co.uk So it's up for grabs whether one or more locally based cars, or brought in on the Britannia from UK and then brought back afterwards. |

Rfs agrees this is Nairobi in the main pic, the Ascaris and the notice referring to the East African Standard being the clues. -- Last edit: 2017-02-26 18:54:00 |

Revisiting a few years later with the aid of a couple of Humber books doesn't solve anything definite, but adds context info. In 1951 Humber got the contact to supply 26 assorted Humbers for George VI's planned 1952 Australian tour - apparently 1 Pullman Landaulet, 1 "specially equipped" Pullman, 12 standard Pullmans, and 12 standard brand new Super Snipe Mk4s. All 26 were shipped out in advance, but with his death mothballed until being used on Queen Elizabeth's 1954 visit. The fleet stayed in Aus (and NZ) before being eventually sold off, with most disappearing. One survivor was given a major resto for the coronation of King Tupou VI of Tonga in 2015, but no info which car this was. Conclusion: these Aus cars are not part of the story here. The various book pics of the royal Pullmans in early 50s almost all - where visible - show round sidelights, which was normally Mk2, May 48 to Sept 49 only, replaced by rectangular (as seen here) for Mk2 second year and Mk3. Round light photos include Princess Elizabeth opening the 1951 Festival of Britain in HWK 122 (a Coventry plate issued Dec 48), various staged factory photos of gleaming brand new special Pullmans, including a fully open convertible tourer and this Landaulet design, labelled as "Special Enclosed Drive". The fully open tourer eventually used by the queen on the 54 tour also has round lights - maybe it was the "specially equipped" Pullman from the 1951 tour?? Or a remnant from the 1948 Aus/NZ tour, which my books only mention in passing?? There are also various photos of Pullman limos and Landaulets in UK settings and parades, but not specifically identified, some show mixtures of round and rectangular lights. However our Kenya car above is the only identifiable rectangular light Landaulet I've found. Conclusion - there were a few royal/state Special Enclosed Drive Landaulets from 1948 into the mid-50s. And my comment above is still the best I can offer. |
