Apparently a big budget production by ITV with a star cast which was meant to go to a second series (there's a big hook at end of ep 1.06), but cancelled as viewing numbers were poor. Possibly because plot was overloaded with major twists constantly arriving, so it became a hard slog to keep up with everything. The lead character kept on creating havoc without any recognisable logic, goodies became baddies, baddies became goodies and some then started reverting. But it was an exciting - if exhausting - ride.
