Are episodes missing because the tape they were filmed on was recorded over or erased? Several early episodes of Dr. Who were considered lost this way until they turned up in a pantry cupboard! |

I wouldn’t know for sure, but some episodes might’ve not been recorded during their run’s. |

It's a different situation with these. Things that ger erased are done on videotape and not on film. These series predate videotape use in TV broadcast (1956). Because the early videotape was expensive, broadcasters taped over the tapes frequently. This happened until 1976 when a new version of videotape was introduced, which was cheaper and smaller, so they could be stored easily. Things on film that get lost, tend to be because of deterioration and neglect. Lost of old films and TV series were not stored properly, especially if they fall out of favor and are forgotten. |

Yeah, it's a very tragic case. especially for early-1900s movies, of which 90% between 1895 and 1930 are lost due to a combination of what you said, plus the materiel the film was made of ( was highly combustible. And as dicktraceyfan1 said, sometimes they were simply broadcast live and not recorded which resulted in most television of the '40s, including the first film adaptation of The Time Machine, being lost. There's actually an entire website dedicated to cataloguing and recovering lost media! https://lostmediawiki.com/Home -- Last edit: 2024-01-08 22:53:21 |

I love watching videos about lost media! The ambient music and calm voices really make it mysterious. |

Same! Personally I would like to see the Herbie Deleted Scenes found. |
