This film is based on some of the most notorious murder cases EVER committed in Australian criminal history, The Backpacker Murders committed by Ivan Milat in the Belanglo State Forest just 9 km south west of Berrima, NSW between 1989 and 1992, and the disappearance and suspected murder of British backpacker, Peter Falconio and the attack on Falconio's girlfriend, Joanne Lees committed by Bradley James Murdoch near Barrow Creek, Northern Territory on the night of the 14th July 2001.

The film is also based on the crimes of Joseph Schwab.

Joseph Schwab was a 26 year old German tourist who shot and killed five tourists at the Victoria River in the Northern Territory and at the Pentecost River Crossing near Wyndham, Western Australia between the 9th and 14th June 1987.

Investigations made by both the Northern Territory Police and Western Australia Police revealed that Schwab had first came to Australia on the 15th June 1981, residing in South Australia where he undertook work as a cabinetmaker and became a member Southern Cross Pistol Club at Torrensville, South Australia.

He returned to Germany (then known West Germany) on the 10th May 1984 where he became an night watchman where he was armed with a .357 Magnum revolver.

During his time in Germany, Schwab became involved with a criminal gang resulting in convictions for Break and Enter and Car Theft, he later left West Germany for Australia on the 16th April 1987, arriving in Queensland two days later on the 18th April.

On the 22nd April 1987, he rented a white Toyota 4Runner (Queensland Registration 338-PNZ), using the name of a different Joseph Schwab with a fake address in Munich, and on the 23rd April, he purchased four rifles and 3000 rounds of ammunition from the 5 Ways Firearms Store on Logan Road at Woolloongabba, Queensland, he returned the following day to pay the rest of the money that he owed on the rifles and ammunition.

His victims that he killed in the spree were:

Marcus and Lance Bullen - Father and son, shot while looking for fishing spots on the banks of Victoria River, Northern Territory on the morning of the 9th June 1987.

Both men were heading home to Western Australia after vacationing in the Northern Territory with their wives.

After killing the men, Schwab stripped and buried them in two shallow graves, he then took the Bullens' car and then dumped it in a river bed nearby where it was set on fire.

Julie Warren and Philip Walkemeyer - Engaged couple from Kununurra, Western Australia, shot with their friend, Terry Bolt at their camp at the Pentecost River Crossing near Wyndham, Western Australia on the morning of the 14th June 1987.

Terry Bolt - Friend of Julie Warren and Philip Walkemeyer, shot with Warren and Walkemeyer at their camp.

After killing the three, Schwab stripped and drag them to the river where he dumped them, he later loaded up their 4WD and took it to a gully nearby where it was set on fire, a truck driver who was driving his Kenworth road train to Wyndham, spotted the black smoke coming from the gully where the 4WD was burning.

Schwab was later killed in a shootout with the Western Australia Police Tactical Response Group on the afternoon of the 19th June 1987, his motive for the killings has never been revealed.

Inside the 4Runner were the items that belonged to the five victims including cheque books, driver's licenses, camping gear, and firearm licenses.

Also recovered in the vehicle were a pair of boots that matched the boot prints found at the crime scenes at the Victoria and Pentecost Rivers, along with 10 sets of animal horns that were sawn from water buffalos that he shot at Carmor Plains Reserve on the 4th June.
