This movie's writing reminds me of Dreamworks' Madagascar. |

I like to think this was Disney's revenge for Dreamworks stealing their idea two years before; they said "Well two can play at that game" and made their version of Madagascar. I haven't seen this movie in 15 years and remember very little about except there being real advertisement (swatch), dogs chasing the animals into the sewers, the koala being the star of the zoo and the ending: |

Saw this tonight for the first time in 15 years. Man this movie rocks. The animation is amazing even 15 years later. The animals all look very real and natural, but are still very expressive. The backgrounds are lush and vibrant, especially in the jungle scenes. Whereas Madagascar is zany and over-the-top with laugh-out-loud humor, The Wild plays it smooth with quirky one liners. (“That settles it. My mother definitely drank pool water when she was pregnant with me,” “I wasn't meant for this, Benny. I was meant to nibble, and be elegant, and appear in children's books as the letter G”) There was indeed product placement (Kodak, The Lion King) but I didn't see Swatch, must have been in Madagascar. I did notice a few more vehicles, but they were mostly oblique, including some taxicabs (a Caprice is well visible when the dogs attack) when they ride the trash truck and a Jeep Wrangler on the island. And hardly any Disney song is so addictively feel-good as “Really Nice Day” Which reminds me - doesn't the first Madagascar have any vehicles? Particularly the scenes in Times Square? |
