The characters, their characteristics and even the events in the film are based on the family members of the Pettingill Crime Family, their associates and the police officers, these include: Janine "Smurf" Cody (portrayed by Jacki Weaver) - Based on Kath Pettingill, Former prostitute and later; brothel madam and matriarch of the Pettingill Family, lost a eye after being shot in a dispute over a $300 debt. Joshua "J" Cody (portrayed by James Frechville) - Based on Jason Ryan, Kath Pettingill's grandson and the nephew of Pettingill Boys, testified against his uncles in their involvement in the Walsh Street Police Murders in 1991, is now in witness protection with his mother. Andrew "Pope" Cody (as the older brother, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn) - Based on Dennis Ryan, known as Dennis Allen, Mr. Death, Mr. D and Gus, Kath Pettingill's oldest son, drug dealer, murderer and police informant, had previously served 10 years in prison for rape in the 1970s and was later named in 13 murders and later named as a suppler to former corrupt NSW Police Detective Sergeant Roger Rogerson, died of heart failure at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne on the morning of the 13th April 1987. Pope Cody (as a armed robber) - Based on Victor Peirce, Kath Pettingill's 6th oldest son, drug dealer, armed robber and murderer, was the lead robber of the Flemington Armed Robbery Gang as well as being involved in several bank robberies throughout Melbourne between late 1987 and early 1988, was later involved in the murders of Constables Steve Tynan and Damien Eyre at Walsh Street in South Yarra, Victoria in the early hours of the 12th October 1988 and later acquitted in 1991, was later convicted of drug trafficking and served 6 years imprisonment in the late 1990s, shot and killed as he was sitting in his Holden Commodore opposite the Coles Supermarket on Bay Street in Port Melbourne, Victoria on the night of the 1st May 2002 during the Melbourne Gangland War. It was believed that Andrew "Benji" Veniamin was the gunman, Veniamin himself was later shot and killed in the later stages of Melbourne Gangland War by Domenic "Mick" Gatto at the La Porcella Restaurant in Carlton, Victoria on the morning of the 23rd March 2004, Gatto was later acquitted of Veniamin's murder on the grounds of self-defense in 2005. Craig Cody (portrayed by Sullivan Stapleton) - Based on Trevor Pettingill, Victor Peirce's younger half brother, drug dealer and burglar, had multiple convictions for drug and firearms offenses, was later involved in the Walsh Street Police Murders and acquitted, his son, Jamie has two convictions for assault, threating and theft. Darren Cody (portrayed by Luke Ford) - Based on Jamie Pettingill, Kath Pettingill's youngest son and armed robber, was later involved in the shooting of an attendant during a failed armed robbery at the United Kingdom Hotel in Clifton, Victoria on the 5th March 1980, later convicted of the armed robbery and the murder of the attendant as the attendant died of a blood clot in hospital and served 5 years in prison, was later then suspected in the bombing of the Melbourne Coroner's Court in the early hours of the 11th May 1985, died of a drug overdose on the 14th May 1985. It was suspected that other members of the Pettingill-Pierce Family were involved in the bombing of the Melbourne Coroner's Court as the Coroner's Court was due hold the coronial inquest into the death of local prostitute and associate of the Pettingill Family, Helga Wagnegg whose body was found in the Yarra River, a few kilometres from the Pettingill Compound in Stephenson Street, Richmond, Victoria, it was also suspected that Dennis Allen was the one who gave Wagnegg the fatal hotshot of heroin and had drown Wagnegg in a bucket of water from the Yarra River before dumping her body in the river. Barry "Baz" Brown (portrayed by Joel Edgerton) - Based on Graeme Jensen, armed robber, member of the Flemington Armed Robbery Crew and associate of Victor Peirce, was later suspected in the murder of Armaguard security guard, Domenic Hefti who was shot during a armed robbery at the Coles Supermarket in Brunswick, Victoria on the morning of the 11th July 1988, shot and killed by members of the Victoria Police Armed Robbery Squad as he was making his getaway in his Holden Commodore Station Wagon in Narre Warren, Victoria on the afternoon of the 11th October 1988. Catherine "Cathy" Brown (portrayed by Mirrah Foulkes) - Based on Sandra Faure, Jensen's girlfriend, met Jensen through her husband and associate of the Flemington Crew, armed robber Keith Faure in May 1988 and started a relationship with Jensen after Faure was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for the robbery and the manslaughter of jeweller, Mario Sassano who was shot in front of Sassano's wife and son during a robbery on Sassano's home in Thornbury, Victoria on the 29th December 1987, Sandra Faure was also the owner of the blue Holden Commodore Station Wagon that Jensen was driving when he was killed. Constables Daniel Hordern and Peter Simmons (portrayed by Tim Phillipps and Josh Helman) - Based on Steve Tynan and Damian Eyre, Victoria Police constables assigned to the Victoria Police Prahan Branch, was assigned to a police divisional van call-sign, Prahan 311, shot and killed while checking out their 9th call of the night, a stolen car abandoned in Walsh Street at South Yarra, Victoria by members of the Flemington Crew in the early hours of the 12th October 1988. Detective Nathan Leckie (portrayed by Guy Pearce) - Based on Dave Sprague, Victoria Police Detective Inspector assigned to the Victoria Police CI Squad, was the lead officer on Ty-Eyre Taskforce investigating the murders of Constables Tynan and Eyre, later promoted to commander and placed in charge of Operation Spectrum Taskforce, tasked with the investigation into the "Mr. Cruel" Serial Child Rapist Case, reassigned to the Victoria Police Ethical Standard Division before retiring from the Victoria Police in 2011. Ezra White (portrayed by Dan Wyllie) - Based on Andrew Fraser, former Melbourne-based lawyer, was known for defending members of Pettingill family and their associates and later; the Walsh Street Killers, later defended businessman, Alan Bond in his fraud trial in Perth during the mid 1990s, was later convicted in 2001 for drug importation, later released in 2006 after testifying against serial killer, Peter Dupas at Dupas' trial for the murder of Mersina Halvagis who was stabbed by Dupas at Fawkner Cemetery in Fawkner, Victoria on the afternoon of the 1st November 1997. Even the scenes were based on what happened to the Pettingill Family's Associates: Baz's Death - Based on the death of Graeme Jensen, was under surveillance for armed robbery and murder, shot in bungled attempt to arrest him by Senior Detective Robert Hill of the Victoria Police Armed Robbery Squad at Narre Warren, Victoria on the afternoon of the 11th October 1988. Craig's Death - Based on the death of Jedd Houghton, Armed robber and member of the Flemington Crew, was under surveillance for his involvement in the Walsh Street Police Murders, shot by members of the Victoria Police Special Operations Group in a raid on his caravan at the Big Four Ascot Lodge Holiday Park in Bendigo, Victoria in the early hours of the 17th November 1988.
