The 1936 M/B 540K which appeared in the movie, "Topper Returns" is arguably one of the most beautiful automobile designs ever, but I would imagine that the producers of the movie later regretted their choice. The movie, having been released in 1941, was just prior to the United States involvement in WW2, and Mercedes association with Adolph Hitler would not have been admired by the general public. Still, I imagine that most movie-goers of 1941 would not have recognized the car as being German anyway, so perhaps that's of little consequence. A magnificent automobile.....too bad that Mercedes was so admired by the likes of Adolph Hitler. John Northup Society of Automotive Historians member # 0955 |

There is a 1932 Ford Roadster in the film. It is made to appear to crash into a tree and parts fall off after the driver sees a supernatural phenomenom. I think the car is a deluxe because it has cowl lamps. There is a 1932 Ford Roadster in every Topper movie--not sure if it is the same car everytime. In the first Topper movie, the roadster is a Model B; I am guessing this because of the lack of V-8 Badge on the headlight bar. I can't really tell if the the car in Topper Returns is a Model B or a V-8. Pomeroy. |

Currently available on Amazon Prime. A pretty great car chase with the Mercedes (driving itself!) and the Packard. |
