Nothing on imcdb; Austin promo film on this DVD
[Image: dvdcover.1.jpg]
- see /movie.php?id=1004516488 . Also can be seen here and here

BMC promo by Pathe for the new Austin A95 Westminster, 23 minutes long, filmed in October 56 as the car was launched. Flimsy plot - an Aussie who had flown Lancasters in WW2 from a base somewhere around Buckinghamshire returns to show his family all his favourite places. Hires an A95 from Austin's big showroom in London
[Image: showroom.jpg]
for 2 weeks and they drive to Cornwall and back, visiting old haunts, having cliched adventures, and loving their A95 so much that he buys one at the end to ship home with him. Despite the voiceover's patronising and anodyne commentary - meant to be the Aussie giving a narrative story - it is very well done with excellent travelogue scenery, and lots of set pieces to emphasise what 1956 Englandshire means compared to previous monotone 1950s austerity. Also probably a novelty for the film to be in high quality colour instead of usual Pathe b&w, so they use lots of strong vivid colours - the A95s, the woman's clothes, Trooping the Colour parade etc - to emphasise the contrast.

One sequence has them accidentally discovering a Trials car event
[Image: trials.jpg]
held at Bovingdon Heath army camp in Dorset. Lots of trial car footage and therefore car pages, but the only reference I can find is this notice from Motor Sport magazine archive:
"KNOTT CHALLENGE CUP TRIAL - This will be held over a strictly sporting course on Wool Heath, Bovingdon, on October 17th, and counts for the Trials "Star." Organised by the W. Hants. & Dorset M.C., the start and finish will be at the Binnegar Hotel, near Wareham. The Bristol, N.W. London, Southsea, M.G., Vintage, Maidstone & Mid-Kent, Harrow, N.L.E.C.C., and J.C.C. are invited, as the event will also form a combined Team Trial. Details can be had from secretaries of the invited clubs."

Lots of 1950s stuff:

- fish
[Image: fish.jpg] [Image: fish2.jpg]
(I feel sorry for the kid - gets carted round the world for the trip of a lifetime and has to wear his school blazer most of the time)

- rugged faces of Cornish fishermen
[Image: fishermen2.jpg] [Image: fishermen.jpg]

- the posh village's annual peasant hunt
[Image: peasanthunt.jpg]

- big lollipops
[Image: lollipops.jpg]

- the village garage with assorted petrol pumps and brands (both pics are same garage)
[Image: pumps.1.jpg] [Image: pumps2.jpg]

- old coach opposite the garage
[Image: coach.jpg]
not sure where, but it's soon after they leave Marlow heading west (along the old A4??) and pub behind is East Arms, in a very picture book English village

- village shop with loads of entries for im1950sbreakfastcerealsdb
[Image: villageshop.jpg] [Image: villageshop2.jpg]

[Image: villageshop3.jpg] [Image: villageshop4.jpg]
Weetabix, Kelloggs Corn Flakes, Frosties, Sugar Puffs, Puffed Wheat (they were horrid - just naked Sugar Puffs) but sadly no Shredded Wheat. Lots of tinned soups and jars of pickled beetroot instead.

Plane for impdb if you really want it - supposed to be the exact Lancaster our hero flew in WW2 for an Aussie squadron because the code matches
[Image: lancasteraussqdnb.jpg] [Image: lancasteraussqdn.jpg]
- seen in display on a pub wall. And for imairlinememorabiliadb
[Image: quantas.jpg]
which is slightly odd as the film opens with them arriving in UK by liner at the docks

Interesting as the trials irons are, and having competed in trials many years ago, I'm afraid I just don't have the time to plough through dozens of copies of Motor Sport to find out what their constructors called them. The usual starting point was an Austin Seven or Ford Eight chassis, fiddle brakes were necessary, and you obtained your power using whatever came to hand, tuning for low end torque rather than out and out power, although things changed into the 1960s.
