I thought this was MT 904 but the closest I can find is 'MT 906' which is a 'Arnold Motor' Engine size 443cc. "Also at Beaulieu is the 1896 Arnold, an anglicised version of the German Benz dogcart built by a firm of agricultural engineers from East Peckham, Kent, who as "Arnold's Motor Carriage Company" had exhibited two cars at the Crystal Palace show in May 1896. Looks correct to me. MT906 thus is a 1896 Arnold 1½HP Dogcart (one of two surviving and of about 12 built) It has a single cylinder engine that developed 1½ hp @ 650/min. My source lists a capacity of 1190cc, not 443. Walter Arnold agreed with Benz to produce a British version of the car. The first customer car was sold before the 1896 Act ‘liberated’ the British car, almost certainly making the Arnold-Benz the first ‘British’ car to go on sale. This in fact IS the very first Arnold car, and an amalgam of British and German components and engineering. Seems that the Benz 'Veloziped' was the basis. This very car took part in the London-Brighton ‘Emancipation Run’ in November 1896, and is today on show in the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Actually, this is the second car I found that participated in the original run, the other being a 1895 Panhard & Levassor which also was the first automobile imported to GB (exhibited at the London Science Museum, as far as I know). A descendant of the Arnold company still exists in the UK. |

There seems to be a problem with the registered and listed cylinder capacities , I encountered the same with the Montagu Museum Wolseley 6 hp in this documentary ( see comments there )and elsewhere with a Prince Henry Vauxhall. In this case 443 cc seems small.The contemporary light single cylinder Benz on which the Arnold is based had a cylinder capacity of 1045 cc , so I rather opine with the 1190 cc of chief tin cloud. |
