DatsunZ is correct. There are Australian assembled VW Type 1 cars out there. |

Overriders on the bumper seem to be longer than the original ones. Was that for the Australian built beetles only? |

You guys are gonna absouloutly HATE ME for this but in a quick summary how can I indentify the diffrences between beetles? |

No reason/possibility for hate, but a short summary is definetely impossible. Just because of the variety. ![]() ![]() If I need really detailed informations, I have to ask a friend, who is dealing with original parts for classic VW's since nearly 30 years. But even he, also the other freaks and dealers in the Beetle-scene, which I know, are not always sure, when the questions about Beetle-versions, built somewhere on the world. My friend has good connections to Brazil (owns also some private imported Brazilian VW's), so about the South American VW's his knowledge is quite good. But here a mini-summary for you ![]() The years are the model-years, which have begun at VW always after the summer-vacations in the year before - pre 1953 split window "Brezel" - 1953-1957 oval window "Ovali" - 1958 big back window - 1961 no semaphores any more in the B-pillar (in Germany, in other countries it was different) - 1964 bigger side windows (except in Brazil) - 1968 upright front lamps (in the USA already in 1967), "railroad-track-bumpers" (except the basic 1200) - 1971-1973: 1302 (added to the 1200 and 1300), to identify by the higher front due the McPherson-front axle - 1973-1975: 1303 (successor of the 1302, same front, rounded front screen, plastic dashboard, "elephant foot"-back lamps) - 1974: front indicators went from the top of the front fender to the bumper (not in Mexico and Brazil) - 1978-1985: after the German production stopped, imported from Mexico to Europe - 1995-1998: some private imports of Mexican made Beetles to Europe, sold also at McDonalds or ALDI, but not by VW - 2003: a handful of "Ultimà Edicion"-Beetles were shipped to Europe. There are a plenty of other details, at least every year between 1949 and 1978 was changed anything. Too much to list... |

1963-1967. Wipers parked on right indicate pre-1968 car (Australian Bugs got enlarged windows for 1968). No Wolfsburg crest on bootlid. -- Last edit: 2014-02-07 13:41:13 |

DynaMike NL ◊ 2007-07-21 13:12 Quote Overriders on the bumper seem to be longer than the original ones. Was that for the Australian built beetles only? It should have "towel rail" guards on the bumpers - they've been removed but the supports can still be seen. |
