M24 Chaffe..the main battle scenes (when the tanks crash through brick walls..buildings collapsing etc) was filmed in the Czech town of Most,75 miles NW of Prague..the film crew were actually given permission to blow up half of the town. When you see the scene where tanks are in front of a building which then collapses..this is genuine, not a special effect.
The Town of Most ,originally part of the German Sudetenland had the right period architecture to double as Remagen..Most had been slowly razed to the ground by the Czechs to unearth vast coal deposits discovered beneath it...the Czech authorities let the film crew and Czech demolition experts actually blow up the abandoned part of Most so after filming the could move in and get at the coal deposits.
they demolished 3 streets during filming with 4,000 sticks of industrial TNT and 600 pounds of dynamite, all the M24 Chaffes were on loan to the film crew from the Austrian Ministry of Defence.
when the town was blown up,it was reported that Russian troops had begun exercises just over the frontier.as you look at the above picture take note of the two tyres visible to the top right of the tank turret...this is a genuine WW2 Steyr 1500 A heavy command car, which was placed in the "road block" by the film crew with a crane..then (quite possibly the only original Ww2 German vehicle in the film) was crushed by this very same tank...which then blew its exhaust ...hence the smoke...not a special effect!!.
