Hep, les gars, Chris40, dsl and others: is there a place (site) where the UK registrations are given with tips to help the average IMCDber? |

Link to "en.wikipedia.org" is useful in general terms, but dsl has a magic book which enables him to date pre-1963/5 registrations. I usually drop him a hint if I can't date something myself. |

There is this - http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/reg-letters.htm - but it is not as accurate as my magic book - Glass's Index of Registration Numbers 1929-65 which is fairly rare but does come up sometimes on ebay UK, and if you're lucky can be quite cheap. johnfromstaffs uses A History of Motor Vehicle Registration in the United Kingdom as his bible and it's probably just as good as Glass's, although I don't find it as easy to use quickly. Probably about 99% of the data is the same in both books. |

But it does go right back to 1904. I admit it's a bit complex, but I don't find it a problem because I have memorized most of the two letter combinations and don't need to look up where they come from, just their accurate dates. It's just another way of combating senile dementia, keep the brain active. -- Last edit: 2014-05-12 10:45:51 |
