On a slightly unrelated note, this site claims that the Bellel was sold in the US (and not just Hawaii) http://www.justacargeek.com/2011/12/1964-isuzu-bellel.html Does anyone have more information on that? Because I was under the impression that Isuzu didn't enter the mainland US market until 1981... ![]() |

According to "The Standard Catalog of Imported Cars 1946-1990" by James M Flammang: Isuzus were not ordinarily imported into the US under their own name until the 1980s. Advertisements omitted the Isuzu name completely, calling the four-door sedan simply the "Bellel 2000 Diesel". The US distributor (listed as Trans-Alpac Corp., Burbank CA) immodestly promoted the Bellel as the "world's greatest getaway car", and as "the lowest priced, highest quality, diesel-powered automobile in the world" offering "classic styling" that didn't change dramatically each year. 1961-65 Bellel - 2000 - Four - A diesel four-cylinder engine powered this sedan, which was the first car designed by Isuzu. Though rare in the US, it was advertised for sale and listed in some directories if imported models. The four-door sedan had a sharp edged profile with a large rectangular mesh grill, and large parking lights below the headlamps. "Bellel Diesel" script went on the cowl, above a full-length bodyside molding. A station wagon was also advertised in 1965. The four-door sedan was listed at POE (Point of Entry) price of $2,690, with the four-door wagon at $2,990 (model year was not listed). So typical of imported cars before the late 1960s (when the federal government really started safety regulations for all autos), they were not imported by the manufacturer, but by an importer, so technically they were not imported by and sold by Isuzu. I've never seen one in the states and most likely sales were only on the west coast. |

Also found a Popular Science article from November 1964 on the model. Link to "books.google.com" |
