More or less correct. It was indeed designed in the US by a couple of trendy designers, yet its underpinnings are the same as the one the Golf Mk IV, the first A3 and the first Octavia had. "A4-Plattform" was the German name for it if my memory isn't letting me down. Besides, the large majority was of course by far made in Mexico, but IIRC, at the very beginning of the unusually long production run of this type, assembly started in Wolfsburg (October 1997-1999) while Puebla joined in a couple of months later in 1998. So the oldest "New" Beetles that are still around were indeed built in Germany. To be honest, I've no idea why they decided to do it that way, but they acted a bit similar when the Lupo was introduced. The first couple of years, it was made in Wolfsburg (just like the more or less identical Seat Arosa for its first year as well, BTW) until the toolings were re-installed in Brussels (in 2001 or so). Only production of the unsuccessful Lupo 3L TDI remained in Germany until the end. |
