Used by the Brigadier and Captain Yates in episodes 2, 3 and 4 of "Terror of the Autons". Is involved in an action scene in a quarry when they go to rescue the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) and Jo Grant from Autons disguised as policeman, Yates dodges a couple of explosions (from the Autons shooting at him) and runs one of them over (I found it hard to get decent-looking captures from this bit so I left it). In the DVD commentary, Katy Manning (Jo), Nicholas Courtney (Brigadier) and producer Barry Letts say the Maxi was a bit of a girl's car and not the sort of car you'd think the Brigadier would have but they didn't have much money (although this was always the case with the original Doctor Who series) and they joke that they'd just gotten the Brigadier a new uniform and cap so he had to have a Maxi (in the previous season he wore a coverall-style uniform which didn't look as smart or authentic)

Birmingham plate so maybe on loan from BLMC?

There has to be some novelty in using a Maxi in an action sequence

Birmingham registration 2 months before Maxi launched........ Also has 1800 wheel trims - not usually fitted to Maxi- and I'm not sure if this was a production colour. What's the ep date?

The wheels look over-large for a Maxi, hence the ADO17 wheel trims. Pre-production prototype?

It's a press launch Maxi from the launch in Oporto Portugal, take a look at this image from the "Austin Rover" website: http://www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/2011/10/27/blog-aronlines-time-machine/

In the early 70s Leyland lent a lot of Maxi's from the press dept to the BBC, sadly the wrong kind of TV shows, giving the idea they where owned by physcopaths instead of putting them on cop shows. Here's another, Out of the Unknown: Death Day Episode with Robert Laing in 1971 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTH8ej9aANU

As it's named "pre-production", wouldn't it be correct, if it would be listed as "proto/concept" either?

No, it's still the same design, only has very minor differences like the wheels.

A Maxi MkII also makes a flitting pass in Tom Baker's last show Logopolis the memorable scene where he sees "The Watcher"(the future Doctor) for the first time.

For interest, Maxi saloon was an abandoned UK design proposal before hatchback launch, later adopted by Aus for Kimberley and Tasman [YDO17]

Plate looks like NOB 545F or similar = Birmingham, April 1968.
