I've been back and looked at this picture a few times, and I still agree America 4 door. The blur makes it difficult to see if it has Mk1 or Mk2 tail lights, and the bumper over-rider is missing (which for 2 door got a rubber inset for US in 1971). But it is definitely a 4 door as vertical B-pillar and taller angled C-pillar outline; there is a chrome blob which could be rear door handle, but 2 door filler cap was in similar position so this is not conclusive. The America was the only US ADO16 to have the thick silvery aluminium side strip as here; there were a few Mk1 Morris and MG 1100 4 doors and an MG-badged Vanden Plas 4 door, but these had no side trim (Morris) or thin chrome (MG and MG VdP). Would still like to see confirmation/dates of 4 door America existence, but the picture looks good to me. |

Here's a picture of a 4-door Austin America sitting in a junkyard on this website Link to "www.dailyturismo.com" |

Let's save that for reference: |

Yes, but note that one was in Canada and not the US. |

@tom11 - nice one - thanks. Slight doubt because I don't know if/what other ADO16 were sold in CDN alongside the America. The photo is a 68+ Mk2 for tail lights so right period, but no sign of any fixings for the side trim strips, so may or may not be an America (despite the claim on that website). CDN tended to have wider choice of UK models/versions 68-72 than US as slower to impose safety and emissions restrictions. |

Don't know about CDN, but I know that we also got the MG version of the ADO16 in the USA as the "MG 1100 Sports Sedan", and according to Alexander a few Vanden Plas Princess 1100s were sold in the USA as "MG Princess 1100" /vehicle_27858-MG-1100-Sports-Sedan-ADO16-1963.html -- Last edit: 2012-12-07 02:57:18 |

Best Austin America timeline I can knit together from a mix of online sources and book refs. None of them give a full account, so have tried to bridge gaps by mixing and matching. This page has useful pictures of most changes, but not all of them. 1] March or May 68 introduced in US as 2-door, 1275cc automatic only. Also sold in CDN and CH. Grille of horizontal bars as UK Austin 1300. No headrests. Thick brushed aluminium side trim strips. Shiny wheel trim rings. Small round front side running light below trim strip, nothing at rear. No headrests. 2] Oct 68 Small headrests. I don't think any other changes at this point. 3] Oct 69 New rectangular indicators on front wing, reflectors within the side strip at front and rear, Leyland badge on front wing, rubber insets on over-riders, sidemarkers within the side strip. Possible changes at this point (visible on several pics but dating unconfirmed) - possibly bigger fully incorporated headrests, new wheel format with perforated style as UK Mk2 and loss of shiny wheel trim rings. 4] Oct 70 New front grille with black format, similar to UK 1300 GT. Shiny roof guttering. New thinner side strip with black insert (rubber??) and without incorporated reflectors, which were now incorporated into bigger front sidemarkers below side strip and the first rear sidemarkers below side strip. Possible manual option for first time. Some sources say vinyl roof, but not present on 2-door pic above. However this is the point when the mysterious 4 door arrives, which seems to have been vinyl roof (so with the new grille looks similar to UK 1300 GT, but without the GT black spider wheeltrims or badges). The only evidence for the 4-door is our 2 examples, plus the scrappie picture above, so total at the moment is 3 cars. 5] Sept 71 - production ended after 58,500 made (including CDN and CH sales) although remnant stocks continued sales into 1972; all Americas therefore within the UK Mk2 ADO16 era. Replaced in US by Austin Marina. |
