There is written "Riviera" on the rear fenders. a Limited Edition ? |

Seems there were indeed a few "Riviera" limited edition and from a quick check we don't seem to have any other on imcdb. Had the detachable panel roof, multi-louvred bonnet, rear spoiler. Launched October 1981. Period promotion article Link to "www.lotusexcel.net" Wiki says just 73 made out of 1500 total Eclats. There was also an Elite Riviera, maybe we have some listed. -- Last edit: 2024-05-04 20:17:00 |

"The Éclat is one of Lotus’s lesser-known models, with only around 1,500 examples produced. Just 223 of these were Riviera versions, whose specification included a removable roof panel, air conditioning, vented bonnet and rear spoiler." - from a 2021 auction ad. Well there's one in Utah with LHD, so not a Brit which has got lost. |

They were imported from about 1976-1980 range. I'd have to double check. Only a handful were sold here though. Here is a brochure from around 1976-1977, when the Eclat was sold as the Sprint. I remember seeing listings as Eclat around 1978-1980. By 1981, only the Esprit was left in the US. Link to "www.hemmings.com" On Ebay here, there is part of the article that Brock Yates wrote for Playboy in April 1979, and it shows the Eclat named being used: https://www.ebay.com/itm/381655107150 That one in Utah I think is an imported European model. It's too new for the US models. -- Last edit: 2024-05-22 03:22:54 |

All the naked truth about Lotus offering in US.. ![]() |

That Utah one may indeed be an imported European model from other hints. First Lotus US renamed Eclats to Sprints, and that one has Eclat rear badge. Second the blurb says 160 bhp which was the UK/Europe output - US output for the n/a 2.2 seems to have been about 140 bhp when fitted in the non-turbo Esprit, which seems the only 2.2 sold in US. Also this forum thread has interesting - if inconsistent - comments on Riviera numbers, particularly for LHDs - from a Dutch owner in 2015 "into its final year the car has a rare option, its Called Riviera, there are 80 cars build .... but only (around) 10 Left Hand Drive cars, I own a very original LHD Lotus Eclat Riviera automatic - there is only one automatic Riviera build of the 10 LHD cars and that's mine" who then a few days later adds "This is a LHD Lotus Eclat Riviera S2.2 Automatic from 1982. Second last Eclat ever built. It's from the second owner who was a car collector in Belgium. He owned the car for Nearly 20 Years. There are worldwide 27 LHD Lotus Eclat S2.2 made, there are probably 4 or 5 Rivieras and probably one or two Automatics! ......Shipping to the USA is possible, I have good contacts and I did that before" Apart from more uncertainty about the overall number of Rivieras made, the number of LHDs seems far too small to count as available in US |

As I stated above, the early ones were called Sprints, but before they stopped importing them, they were sold as Eclats. ![]() They didn't sell the later models in the US. NADA (which is now JD Power) shows the model being available from 1976-1979. Both the import books I have list the same, but because Lotus was in flux during that period, there was not a lot of information saved. https://www.jdpower.com/cars/1979/lotus |
