Note that the year is correct, but that this would be a 1400 that superseded the 1200 with the introduction of this grille and wheelcaps.

actually it is painted "ATSUN" on the tailgate, but it is a 1985-1989 Nissan 1400 built in South Africa. There was no corresponding version high-roof version made outside South Africa.

And the missing D is on the front grille :D Weren't they sold as Datsun with all these logos? Or is it a later model modified with old elements?

So would be "origin South Africa" correct, as it's quite far away from the original Japanese version?

btw.: :think: was there a origin Japanese made Bakkie-version of it?

Yes - the Nissan 1400 (B140) is a unique variation of the worldwide Datsun-Nissan model series B120. In Japan they were marketed as "Sunny Truck". South Africa B120 were marketed as "Datsun 1200" (1971-1976), then "Datsun 120Y" (1976-1980), then "Datsun 1400". Bakkie is a generic word meaning pickup.

In the tv show, she repeatedly refers to it as "my little van" which is apparently what they call pickup trucks in Botswana.

South Africa:
* 1980-1982 "Datsun 1400"
* 1982-2008 "Nissan 1400"
These were built in the Roslyn, South Africa factory.

The year is not correct. It is 1985-1989 based on the raised roof, interior and grille.

There were actually three identical vehicles used in the production. When filming took place at Mokolodi Nature Reserve near Gaborone in Botswana, two of the vehicles with identical number plates had to drive through a police road block to get there. Neither was stopped :)
One scene required the lead character - Mma Ramotswe played by Jill Scott - to drive along a dirt road past a group of rhinos. In fact it was her double who was given the task. She was so nervous that I had to lie on the floor next to her and keep her calm while she drove past the 'dangerous' beasts. The film crew demanded a second take, then a third, and even a fourth. The poor woman was a nervous wreck by this time despite my telling her that these white rhinos would run away if you walked towards them.
Unfortunately, due to a technical error, the scene was not included in the final production.

Photo 1: the man in the white shirt is the late Anthony Minghella, director of "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency".
Photo 2: the reason three identical vehicles were required.
Photo 3: I am doing my best to keep the driver calm.
Photo 4: I am just visible trying to stay out of shot.
