Nonono, see the back lid with the pre-war plate-space and the bigger air-intakes. It's older - to be precise, a 1938 KdF-Wagen. First owner was Robert Ley, the leader of the "Deutsche Arbeitsfront". The car was left over 1945 in Ostpreußen (resp.in the "Memelland", which belonged now to Lithuania), and had a hard life. So it got a DKW-chassis and a DKW-engine. Owned and restored by a private collector. Together with his son, he owns roundabout 70 classic Volkswagens. Real old stuff, like Kübelwagen,. Schwimmwagen, Rometsch, Hebmüller, etc. A story of this KdF-Wagen is to find in this new released magazine: http://www.auto.de/photo/showPhoto/id/45900/ The owner's homepage: http://www.vw38.de/ -- Last edit: 2011-02-05 23:35:59 |

Not a Type 1. This is a Type 38, Which was a Prototype of the Type 1. That's what the guy (Owner of one of the rarest and best VW collections) says. -- Last edit: 2011-02-06 00:21:18 |

So, the starting model year could be 1938? |

Yes. And *nitpicking modus on* "orign Austria" would be correct, a construction, made by the Austrian citizen Ferdinand Porsche in his mechanical garage in Gemunden/A. The question, if before or after the 12th of March http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anschluss , is not important, as the work was done before. |

As a sort of "übernitpicking": AFAIK Ferdinand Porsche built these early Volkswagens in the garage of his house in Stuttgart. Only the early Porsche sportscars were made in Gemunden, Austria. |
