That's not the one they dropped, that would have been an American Beetle..

The purpose in this case was a race between the Porsche 911 and its "direct ancestor" the VW Beetle, with the Porsche racing across the desert and the Beetle falling from a helicopter. The Beetle at some point reaches a maximum velocity, and the Porsche can go past that. So theoretically it should have been a close race. But the Beetle still dropped pretty fast. :D

The main was shown as a static display shot, never driven. The drop was filmed in South Africa, using a totally different one apart from being red. Its plates, for anyone who can trace the local records, were WDX 891 SP. It had the early 70s rounded triangular rear lights and lots of grilles on the boot, but don't ask me to interpret them.

This was used on the airfield drag race with the 911 - surprisingly the 911 won. That VW was PVW 343K (mildly customised as atom says plus sporty steering wheel):
Date of Liability 01 09 2011
Date of First Registration 08 12 1971
Year of Manufacture 1971
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1285CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Licence Not Due
Vehicle Colour RED
The whole feature was a waste of time and money - not funny and impossible to work out what its message was. Most of the rest of this first programme of the new series was similar.

What is the modelname then? Not 1300 I'd guess? Repainted? The plate doesn't belong to the car?

As Gomsel's search, I assume this was a 1972 1300, now re-engined to 1600 and repainted black as shown in latest DVLA check. So keep things as they are.

As it's obviously ensured, that the car on the main pic is a 1972 1300, it's whole front is not original. All parts of it are pre-1967.

The falling car is definetely something different. And when filmed in ZA, probably a model assembled there.

@dsl: The registration is probably WDX 891 GP (Gauteng). There is no SP suffix.

And both are Volkswagons. But after ingos comment we clearly have a mongrel. Suggest we change (1) to Heartbreakkid's DVLA data as its official identity and then give up this one as unsolveable or (2) replace the main with PVW 343K from the airfield drag race if anyone can get a shot - that one was mildly modded but seems genuine .....

Perhaps TG are getting offended by all our comments about the show and JC, so they now put in deliberately unsolvable and sabotaged cars, knowing we'll bust our guts to solve them. Maybe we need a new classification - 'Clarkson's Revenge'.

Ingo DE

Not too far-fetched... Maybe it can cause, if they would recognize, what we are saying, that they pick out some of our favourite cars to destroy them for annoying us. Such wouldn't happen for the first time, see the Marina-story.

So I suggest, to continue with boycotting the series, and that we focuss our insulting and slandering from Clarkson and his concotions better to the direction of the fans of these "shows". :p
