The ferry-scenes were made on Sylt, but not this one. The house is for 100% sure in the USA. |

I think he uses a Jeep in the book. |

![]() The cars in this film have Massachusetts plates, although due to Roman Polanski's, um, personal circumstances, most of this film was shot outside of the US, despite the bulk of the film taking place in Martha's Vineyard/Cape Cod. ![]() Can anyone read the lettering on the door? This tell us what engine this has. |

Appears to be "xDrive30i" as BMW changed the door badges for the 2009 model year to this new format. The BMW X5 boasts xDrive all-wheel drive, which is rather supplied by Magna Powertrain. Magna Powertrain is part of Magna International, which acquired much of New Venture Gear. The xDrive all-wheel drive system features a Magna Powertrain Active Torque Control (ATC) one-speed single range transfer case with electronic centre coupling (multi-disc clutch pack) that can "torque bias". Hill Descent Control (HDC) and 4-wheel dynamic traction control (DTC) off road electronics are fitted as standard to complement the Magna Powertrain system. "30i" would be a 3.0 liter Double-VANOS inline-six engine. The BMW X5 originally had a New Venture Gear transfer case until the 2004 model year, at which point it switched to the Magna Powertrain system. -- Last edit: 2011-08-29 22:06:53 |

It's the xDrive30d. The last letter is too low and wide to be an 'i', the car also has diesel engine sound throughout the movie. |

So it seems, as most of the film was made outside of the U.S., the "xDrive30d" was not available here, only the "xDrive35d". -- Last edit: 2011-08-29 22:26:11 |

I'd go for 35d, actually, but I can't be 100% sure. For U.S. scenes they probably used a 35d, because as you said, the BMW importer won't be able to supply a 30d. But it's hard to tell. However, I am sure it's a diesel. -- Last edit: 2011-08-29 22:16:24 |

Isn't the car US specification anyway? |

I think it is. If you look very closely you can see teeny tiny amber lenses on the side of the front bumper, so it should be a 35d then. I wonder if they actually imported a U.S.-spec X5, since even in the ferry-scenes it has U.S. bumpers. -- Last edit: 2011-08-29 22:42:18 |

My personal guess is 30d, from watching the DVD and freeze framing it. If anyone ever gets the Blu-Ray, they'll probably be able to tell us for sure ![]() -- Last edit: 2011-08-29 22:46:50 |
