Against all the odds, this car does in fact survive and is currently being restored by its long-term owner, known within Sweeney circles as 'Mr Shifter' in the South West of England. It is now one of two Sweeney squad cars to survive (the other being RHJ997R) and is very much the best known of the various cars featured during the course of the four series and two movies as it heavily featured in the title sequence of the first three series of the tv show, plus of course a starring role in many episodes.

As with all of the Ford supplied squad cars featured, this Copper Brown Consul GT was owned by the Ford Motor Company and NHK was originally intended to be a press fleet car. During filming, Ford expressly gave instructions that the car was not to be damaged and despite frequently spirited driving by stunt driver Peter Brayham (RIP) and the everpresent Squad driver 'Bill' (always uncredited but played to perfection by Tony Allen), the car was never shunted, although in the episode 'Stoppo Driver' there was rumoured to be a second stand in Consul, though this is the subject to much discussion on the excellent Sweeney Forum. What is clear is that with the age of DVD can be witnessed some very dodgy continuity where during the course of a chase sequence appears variously dented, undented, dented and finally both undented and very shiny indeed right at the end of the chase sequence. Those in the know suggest there was no second car, but perhaps we'll never know, though to suggest that a factory reject (as the purported second car has been described), was used just for stunts, is stretching credulity somewhat...

Beware of imposters as there are a number of copycat cars out there masquerading as the real thing, including the excellent NHK373M, also a genuine FoMoCo car and deservedly highly prized. I've seen pictures of the restoration in progress of the original '295' and 'Mr Shifter' is doing a fantastic job of restoring this wonderful car from a bare shell up as it was amazingly rusty, so it'll be a good few years before it is back on the streets, but is sure to be quite spectatcular when finished. For many ex Raleigh Chopper riding snotty nosed, flare wearing kids, NHK295M is quite possibly the most evocative car on TV in the 70's, along with Bond's DB5, FAB 1 and the original Batmobile...

Some of the links above currently don’t work but there are some pictures of NHK 295M’s restoration here (at the moment anyway!)
And the newly unveiled car can be seen here:

And it is now 50 years old. Mr Shifter’s Facebook page has added some more information about its early history for its birthday celebration!
