Here in the US it was called "The Thing." I remember those fondly, they came out in the mid 1970s. |

It is a VW 181 (as you figured) called "Kuebelwagen". Still in use at the german Army. |

Rather "Kurierwagen" ; "Kübelwagen" was the Typ 82. |

@ponk: no, the 181 is not any more in use by the Bundeswehr. Even the successor Iltis is nearly gone now. I'd been there in 1990/91 and even in that years the 181 was nearly totally disappeared. It seems so, that the car above is one of the real rare civil versions. To identify by the chrome mirrors, lamp-rings and door-handles. Most important for that identifications are the back door-handles, because the aren't identical with Typ 1 oder Typ 2-parts (no lock...) @Antoine: this may be the correct term, but the 181 is known as "Kübelwagen", too. The club for it (but the WW II-cars, too) is also called "Der Kübel-Klub" |
