The US government had not even been able to get hold of a real one at that time, and they had been trying real hard. If you look at the wheels and the drive sprockets they look nothing like the T-72. A rental "T-72" for film shoots can be found at http://www.melodyranchstudio.com/images/army/T-72.jpg.
