Ooh, a diesel. Introduced in the Eldorado in 1979. Generally considered to be a disaster. |

With the high fuel prizes now, I think it was a good idea by Cadillac? |

Good idea: rubbish motor. I quote journeytoforever.org: General Motors The infamous Oldsmobile diesel engines made by General Motors from 1978-1985. The V8 5.7 liter was fitted to Oldsmobile sedans, Cadillacs and Chevrolets, and some pick-ups. An acquaintance of mine had a 1980 Oldsmobile diesel which (perversely) he liked, but he was in the diesel engine refurbishing business. When he sold it the buyer almost immediately changed the motor for a petrol V8 from a scrap Chevy. |

Yes, it´s true. These Olds diesel engines frequently went kaput - every day, every night. They were even worse than the demon possessed HT4100 engines. |

In typical GM fashion they introduced something new without getting all the bugs out first. Eventualy the GM Diesel 350 was a good engine but because the first ones were such crap the market would have notihng to do with a GM Diesel passenger car. |

Hey guys, don't blame this generation of Eldoradoes!!! Even if they're smaller than the previous ones, it was, nevertheless, a beautiful car!!! And I like GM G-body cars!!! |

These diesels were followed by another infamous engine design...the V8-6-4. Another total disaster. The concept was good on paper but the technology of the time could not realize the reality of cylinder deactivation as we know it today. -- Last edit: 2008-07-23 20:32:58 |
