Why is it so hard to identify ca. 1930 cars? This might be a 1930 Pontiac, the last year for wooden spoke wheels. -- Last edit: 2006-01-08 02:12:26 |

Probably because the main differences were on details only (radiator grills, bumpers, rims, etc...) general shape was very similar in their category ![]() |

This is not a Pontiac.Pontiacs had much more typed front grilles with a vertical chrome strip. The bumper blades were different.1930 Pontiacs had an oval rear window.Beltline moldings were also different. This will be a tough one because as you say 1920's and early 1930 's cars are difficult to identify unless they have typical characteristics.I think we should also avoid to put too hastily a name on a picture and better keep it under unidentified untill we have more certainty. |

For lots of pre-1950 cars we left the model field empty, I guess it is not a problem. |

Did some further research on this one .As indicated , it is not a Pontiac but I would be more inclined to think it is a Buick Marquette Model 30-37 four door sedan of 1930.The Marquette had a 1930 Buick-like radiator shell which this car has.The fine herringbone pattern of the radiator grille may not be very visible here but could be present. The car has 10 spiked wood spoke wheels. The wheelbase is relatively short and may correspond to the Marquettes 114 inches. And the beltline seems to correspond. The Marquette also known as the " Baby Buick" was launched by Buick in june 1929 to cope with the depression. It was powered by a small 212.2 cubic inches side valve six of 67,5 hp of Oldsmobile origin. But it never made a success and was phased out end 1930.Marquettes were distributed in all countries having a major GM operation.Marquette can be considered as a separate make. However I remain open to further forum discussion .After all the aim of this site is to try and find out. |

I was only guessing it being a Pontiac. It is deffo GM, the small chassis and body, not a Chevy, so that left me only Pontiac to guess. I didn't check the Marquette, but after further research based on your's I have to agree that you are right. |

I have access to a Marquette radiator. Chrome looks good. Emblem is excellent. Core looks good externally. Can't even guess internal condition. Any guess what it might sell for? |

Yes the photo is definitely a Marquette Model 30-37 4 dr sedan. The Marquette was a companion car to the Buick for 1930 and was sold as the Marquette Built By Buick. Sales started on June 1, 1929 and many early cars are registered by year of sale 1929 (including my 1929 Model 36 Buisness Coupe). There were 35,007 built in the US and 3,117 built between 2 assembly plants in Canada for a total of 38,425 Marquette's produced I keep the Marquette Owners Registry for Enthuisasts (M.O.R.E.). If you have any interest in the Marquette Automobiles feel free to stop by my site: http://homepage.mac.com/kaholton/topsdown/marquette/marquette.html Unfortunately there is limited Knowledge or collector interest in the Marquette and with that there value is not great with very few being left. Fluxmixt feel free to contact me direct at topsdown@holtononline.com as I would be interested in the Radiator and grille shell. If anyone else has any additonal parts kicking around or information on the Marquette feel free to contact me! |
