Second VW Iltis of the site, it does not seem to be a very common car.
Used here by russians, strange that in this series they use this one (and previously the Auto Union Munga) rather than the more common UAZ.

The Stargate producers have to make do with what they can find locally. No television show has the time or money to scour the world for exactly the right vehicles.

For a 'Russian' jeep, they'd probably be happy with anything that looked old-fashioned and unfamiliar to viewers in the US.

As 'Stargate' is a US-Canadian co-production it is most likely that this is a Canadian built 'Iltis'. Bombardier obtained the production rights and made 1900 Iltis for the Canadian Forces. I don't know if they were allowed or supposed to label the cars as 'Volkswagen', or if these vehicles are 'Bombardier Iltis'. Next to the Canadian Forces the Belgian Army bought 2500. ... Antoine, perhaps you could just check at the next army camp. ;)

I checked the Volkswagen-Bombardier connection:
The Iltis was produced in Canada under the name Bombardier Polecat [Model 183YX]. Production started in 1983.

It was not useful: one came to me :D I saw this in my street yesterday:

(with a belgian military licence plate)

But at the time I took the picture, I forgot your comment about it, and so I did not check if there was a mention of VW or not on it. And as the first photo is a little blurred, it does not help to see if it is a VW logo on the front or not :( (but I think that it is not)
When searching on Internet, I do not find reference to "Polecat": http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Bombardier+Polecat%22
Should not we label it Bombardier Iltis rather?

'Polecat' is the translation of 'Iltis', an animal (lat. Mustela putorius).

I have reference that Bombardier uses the English name 'Polecat' ... but only in a book!

They might use 'Putois' in the Belgian Army! ;)

Checking for logos can be difficult with Belgian Army vehicles ...
Link to "www.armyrecognition.com"

Actually the Bombardier logo can be found on the steering wheel.

Hi, i work for a canadian army surplus in Québec/Canada and i can confirm that these are canadian Iltis used by canadian force. They are equipe with a volkwagen gaz engine and 24 volt alternator but made under bombardier name. Bombardier make snowmobile, plane, ATV, 3 wheel moto, seadoo, train, ... no car except military vehicle. Some of those product are sold under BRP banner. The Iltis we had for sell are praticly sold out but were about 3000$/cnd per unit. We still have truck here the link.

It's cost effective to make movies/tv shows in B.C. Maybe that's why the popular t.v. show "Fringe" is moving shooting from N.Y.C. to Vancouver for this upcoming season this fall.

It's also moving because the money New York State allocated for film and television production tax credits has run out. The exchange rate and tax credit program make British Columbia an attractive location for film and television production.

Long time ago, after the photos posted above, I found another one, I could take a picture of the badge:

The one in the pic is an ex-Canadian military one...back when they were still fairly rare on the open market. Every one I've ever seen in the army and since was a 1985. This was the standard Canadian 1/4 vehicle which took over from the 1974 M151A2 and 1953-71 M38A1 jeeps starting in 1985 and going to about 2003 or so. They come in four configurations: personnel w/tailgate; personnel w/o tailgate; ambulance and line-layer. Supposedly there's also a TOW missile variant but I've never seen one in Canadian service.

Producers do use what they can get locally and paint and markings help sell it as something it isn't, in the belief that 90% of the viewing audience won't know the difference or won't care about it. Works better for some things than others. Increasingly they don't want to spend the money to paint something up properly so it at least looks the part, and just go with the way the vehicle looks on whatever production it was last on - perhaps with a license plate change. So, that Iltis with the Canadian paint job you see on Stargate one week will be a Peruvian General's bodyguard jeep the next week, or border patrol in some fictitious African nation the week after.
