(perhaps faked) German export-plate. Why was it totally wrecked, when it's burning? |

It is an unwanted gift from foreign citizen, a kind of revenge on the beastly communist informer. The costs of insurance, duty etc. which he must pay on the border are monumetnal, and the car is a complete wreck which is weighing two tons (the underbody has the rails welded on) and losing its parts during the ride -- Last edit: 2008-02-08 19:02:57 |

I'm gonna respond to a post from 2008. This car was supposed to be a prize for a polish director - he only knew that he got a Mercedes-Benz (and thought he was to receive then brand new and extremely expensive W124 200D, a much coveted diesel version). He rode a taxi to the border, where he realized he was getting an old and beaten up Mercedes-Benz with large gasoline engine (petrol was back then available only by the use of gas stamps). Firstly the car runs out of petrol, then the engine seizes (oil sump was sabotaged beforehand) and finally, as it was towed by the Fiat 125p, the entire rear axle detaches. Car is left on the side of the road, as the taxi crew and the very unhappy director go to get help. As they come back, they find the Mercedes completely vandalized, and its owner makes the decision to "destroy the carcass completely" (originally "zniszczyć padlinę do reszty"). The Mercedes' remains are then doused with petrol and set on fire. At the end of the episode a flashback is shown, how a man, once betrayed by the mentioned director, finds an old, white Mercedes-Benz W111 at a junkyard, proceeds to partially restore it, and then informs the director of an award. The car falling apart was a revenge. Episode name "Citizen Monte Christo (a jab at Count Monte Christo)". This car was the personal vehicle of Stanislaw Bareja (director of the show), who crashed it en route to Greece in 1980. This crash earned the car a nickname "viscount cut in two". This photo shows this very car after the 1980 accident. Link to "www.zmiennicy.com" -- Last edit: 2015-11-15 22:32:25 |

"Viscount cut in two"... Is that an alocation to "Il visconte dimezzato", the very interesting novel by Italo Calvino ? https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Il_visconte_dimezzato |

Yes, he named this MB after the title of this novel. |

The 'Il visconte dimezzato' survived (short!) burning scene (- Even my wife didn't believe that - said Bareja). Was again completed with all missing elements and sold to new owner. |
