Yes it is. I saw a 1997 former NYC taxi being sold for only $1,500, which is very cheap for a 10-year-old full-size V-8 sedan. It was in very good condition too. Of course, it did have 250,000 miles on it!  -- Last edit: 2008-01-27 01:09:03 |

Hahaha, they want to fool you! A 10-year-old taxi must have much more miles on the clock! I've been told from a friend, a taxi-driver in Hamburg, that a taxi-driver must make minimum 80 000 km per year to earn enough money. 250 000 mls in 10 years, this is nothing for a taxi! 25 000 mls (40 000 km) I'm driving per year, just for the way to my work (80 mls per day). I'm on the Autobahn 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day. This would never ever enough for a taxi-driver! |

You have to understand that by the time 1997's where put in service by NYC, there was a rule stating that taxis could only be run by X amount of years (I think it's three). So it was probably not run as much by NYC as other taxis all over the world have been. |

You're right ford guy. It had been out of service since 2002. The X amount of years in NYC is 6 actually, even though most taxis only make it about 3 or 4 years before being retired. |

Oh, I didn'r know these regulations. Have you found out, what was made with the car between 2002 and 2007? Was it used as a taxi somewhere else? Did it still have the complete taxi-equipment? |

It was just a daily driver for a regular guy who lived in Brooklyn, and no it did not have the taxi equipment anymore. But it was still painted yellow (with gray bumpers of course), which is what appealed to me. |

Similar to me - I'm driving an former army-car, still in olive-green. Is it easy to get the special taxi-equipment again to bring it back in original condition? I know it from taxi-freaks and -collectors in Germany, how difficult it could be to find the orignal taxi-signs, the "taxameter", the CB-radio and other goodies later on, to restore an old taxi. Is an extra allowed, which is actually popular in Prague? Some Czech taxis have electrical wires in the seat (a bit like the electric chair). It was meant for protection against robberys, but in fact some drivers are using them, when they have arguments with the customer about the price. |
