German export number plates plus American specification full amber front sidelights - wonder where/how car this was sourced? |

The plates are probably fakes. You can see them in many older US-made movies (in some movies from other countries, too). Sometimes you'll get the impression, that the movie-makers have thought, that all cars in Germany had oval plates. ![]() |

This is a British series, not American. Back in the 1980s, a neighbour bought a Volkswagen Golf in West Germany and drove it home on oval Zoll plates, because it was cheaper than buying from a UK dealer. And I think ingo said that Americans could buy US-spec Mercedes direct from the factory back in the sixties. |

Not only Americans, from anywhere else, it was possible, too. Also when you, as a German, had a car, which was meant to be brought outside the country, you got these plates. It's similar today. But since 1987 these export-plates aren't oval anymore, they have a special combination, a red registration-sticker (normal ones are silvermetallic, resp.white years ago) and a red bar on the side, there the date is remarked, when the car has to leave Germany at last. |

It is the US-spec sidelights with no white elements (compare with the next entry for a 912) which made me think of a car supplied to a US serviceman (or diplomat or whatever) based in Germany who would then take the car home with them when tour of duty had finished. |
