O-type was June 1939 introduction therefore 1947-50 for OML845 I guess?

OML was Jan 1947 to Jan 1949, "allocated in blocks", 845 likely to be 1948.

Seems strange that Bedford’s made the O and M types side by side when there really wasn’t that much difference. They could have standardised on the O with its longer load area and dropped the M to save costs. That engine was pretty reliable, was the access afforded by the longer bonnet that important?

A good question, yes the M-type (and K-type) could potentially be based on the O-type cab and front end of the chassis. I guess there was the concern that the O-type, as you point out, was a slightly compromised design to minimise the combined cab-bonnet length. How many specific panels that could be commonised is I guess limited to the all those in front of and including the cab's bulkhead/firewall. But yes I see no reason that the whole truck range could be semi-forward control.

Its worth noting that Dodge UK (Kew) 1939-1948 had even more of a normal control versus semi-forward control overlap in its truck range compared with Bedford.

Maybe truck operators were considered to be more conservative when buying trucks and the need for semi-forward control had to be established on the heavier trucks where the increased load-length could be utilised more readily.

Morris-Commercial did the same, but theirs was a decidedly snub nosed effort resulting in a long loading area suitable as a pantechnicon or possibly a long dropsider. The difference in this case was quite marked, so probably worth the effort.
