These Dennis trucks seem to have confused us thus far. As far as I can tell: Dennis RS/SS: This cab used in fire engine applications. SS is the tilt cab version. Dennis Delta: This cab in tipper and haulage applications. Dennis Pheonix: This cab used in refuse collection applications. To confuse matters, it seems that Dennis was split up in 1985 between Dennis Eagle (municipal vehicles) and Dennis Specialist Vehicles (bus and fire). As things stand our collection of Dennis bin lorries are split between Dennis and Dennis Eagle as marque. Most ones like this are up as Dennis Delta. "Duple Metsec, producing mainly bus body kits for the Third World." Ouch ! That's not a nice way to describe Hong Kong and Singapore... |

Dennis Elite would seem to be correct for a 6 wheeler . Incidentaly dsl what data site are you using ? as it seems to be giving a lot of good info. -- Last edit: 2018-07-28 09:35:25 |

It's a mash-up of Experian AutoCheck descriptors with DVLA info fields. AutoCheck usually has a lot of info, but sometimes with commercials they use one-size-fits-all descriptors so needs scrutiny. |

We seem to have a lot of sorting to do out for same things split between Dennis and Dennis Eagle, eg Elite 2 (which by post-1985 date should all be Dennis Eagle??). Suggestions: (1) keep both makes but impose a before/after 1985 date split (so several current Dennis would need shifting to Dennis Eagle, but not the continuing Dennis Specialist Vehicles ranges) (2) lump everything together under Dennis, and completely remove all Eagle references (3) lump everything together under Dennis, but use Eagle where applicable as part of the model name. So for instance this one as a 1987 would become Dennis (make) Eagle Elite (model). Thoughts?? |

I'd go for a date split but was 1985 the date Dennis Eagle became the make ? |

I've got a book source which says that in 1972 Dennis was bought by the Hestair Group, who already owned Eagle Engineering, a "refuse truck and tanker manufacturer"; these became Hestair Dennis and Hestair Eagle. Then in 1989 Hestair sold its commercial vehicle operations to a management buy-out by Trinity Holdings who renamed Hestair Dennis to Dennis Specialist Vehicles and Hestair Eagle to Dennis Eagle. So apparently they were parallel subsidiaries of the same organisation. Other snippets: - Dennis Delta (truck - tipper and general haulage applications) introduced Sept 79 as 16-ton, stopped end of 1983. Unclear if previous Delta ranges existed - Dennis Rapier (fire engine) launched 1991 - Dennis Sabre (possibly fire engine) launched 1992 as a "less sophisticated" Rapier, using similar cab - no mention of Dennis Phoenix - Dennis Eagle Elite (refuse truck) launched 1992, also using the Rapier cab |

And now we have Dennis Eagle ( dustcarts plus some associated special vehicles, no fire engines ) and Alexander Dennis ( bus and coach). -- Last edit: 2018-07-30 14:18:45 |

Period CM article about the formation of Dennis Eagle from 1985: Link to "archive.commercialmotor.com" If the Elite started in 1992, then surely this can't be one? |

^ Depends if the book = British Lorries Since 1945 (Mike Forbes and David Hayward) - is reliable. Which is way above my pay grade to decide, although Mike Forbes has written a fair bit of stuff on British commercials so should be solid. Is this a Rapier cab?? If not, it means Elites could be earlier than 1992?? |

It is not a Rapier cab that is one of those new low line looking things , but AFAIK the six wheel Elite model was around before the introduction of the Rapier cab. As an aside one of the reasons the fire engine business threw the towel in is because they could not provide bulk orders to (seperate company) Dennis Eagle for Rapier/Sabre cabs, so they wouldn't supply them. Good article here on Dennis later history which indicates Dennis Eagle name kicked off in 1999. Link to "autonews.uk.com" -- Last edit: 2018-08-01 09:35:35 |
