Never assume, because it makes an ass out of u and me. Assumptions. 1) that these are United Automobile Services buses. 2) that the older one is not one of the very few Leyland TS7 chassis with ECW coachwork that they operated. 3) that it is not one of the handful of AEC Regals that they operated. 4) that the underfloor engined bus is a Bristol LS with ECW coachwork, United bought their first examples in late 1953. 5) that the older bus is a Bristol L with ECW coachwork. 6) that there is no record of United ever having operated a Guy Arab in any configuration at this time. More assumptions than this I cannot make. http://www.old-bus-photos.co.uk/?p=703 http://www.bristolsu.co.uk/l/operatordetails/unitedautomobile/hhn202.htm -- Last edit: 2018-02-21 10:02:34 |

The nearer is as you say a Bristol LS/Eastern Coachworks. The older bus, were it not for your observation on Tiger TS7s, I would be comfortable with as a classic Bristol L. Were the TS7s rebodies? - that's not a prewar ECW body. |

According to BLOTW all the TS7s were new in 1948/9 but all 30 were rebodied with ECW coachwork, previously having had either Eastern Counties or Burlingham bodies, and may therefore have been “considered” new. According to L H Newall, the index letters on those buses were 1934/5 from Darlington CBC. The 5 Regals had Willowbrook coachwork. I wouldn’t argue against it’s being a Bristol L/ECW. -- Last edit: 2018-02-21 19:38:57 |

So the 1948/9 date refers to the rebody date, and therefore the bodies would look something like that in the photo, but the chassis were prewar. I had a look round on the Web and found a photo on eBay of AHN813 in unrebuilt guise with a Burlingham body. To look like our screencaps above it would have had to have the radiator replaced. I think we're safe in calling it a Bristol L. I note it has Filey as its destination. The movies 'Holiday Camp' http://busesonscreen.net/screen1/index.php?p=screenfm.fmh.holidaycamp and 'When the Bough Breaks' http://busesonscreen.net/screen1/index.php?p=screenfm.fmw.whenbb both have footage of prewar United Bristol Ls at Butlins Filey, also Bristol Js of the same vintage as the TS7s. (Forgive me for referring to my website :-) for the screencaps) -- Last edit: 2018-02-21 22:52:38 |
