 out of curiosity, were HK license plates like that,or are they meant to look like British plates?

 They were similar to British plates, in fact still are, I believe. I imagine they were originally made with tools exported from the UK, but since the advent of plastic plates they often use a slightly different font.

 It seems that Hong Kong adopted white plates at front and back at some point (you can see them here) and then switched to yellow plates at the back. Wikpedia doesn't say when.
