 persoanlly I wish this pragmatic way could be applied more often, today we have too much of the human rights hypocracy where gangsters have much more rights than their victims.... but if you make a killer squad like that you have the problem that many high anking police officers are also corrupt and part of the gangsters

Andre Malraux wrote The film is inspired by real facts.

In 1945, Bucharest was terrorized by gangsters who commited armed robberies and killings. Fights between gangsters and policemen (with victims from both sides) were a common thing. This was not the situation in precedent years, when marshal Antonescu ruled the country with an iron hand. But, in the chaos which followed 23 august 1944, when Antonescu was arrested by king Michael (who still live, is born in 1921 and his passion was alaways cars, since childhood; he always repaired himself his cars; he has a Willys and a Bantam receveid as a gift from americans, they are in perfect condition; king Michael is the president of Retromobil Club), so, in the chaos which followed 23 august 1944, when Antonescu was arrested by king Michael and we began to fight with the allies, against Germany (the contrary to what we did before), many bandits armed theirself and transformed Bucharest (they also acted in other cities) in something like Chicago in the 1930s. It was the same situation as in 1946 - 1955 France, where the so called "Traction Avant (from 1934 - 1957 Citroen, who was their favourite car) gangs" operated.

The man who stopped this gangs was, in France, Roger Borniche (born 1919, still living). In Romania, was the police commissar Eugen Alimanescu (1916 - 1958). He realized is only one method to win against this gangsters: shoot them. He formed a squad of 22 men from the Police Academy, for evoyed to work with corrupted policemen (yes, the same method applied by Eliot Ness) and, with his men, shot the bandits and leave them in the street for three days, as an example. Today, may look brutal, but it was the only solution. IF you succed to arrest these gangsters, IF you succed to find proofs that they are guilty of armed robberies and killings, they produced false witnesses who provied alibies for them. Besides, they were very numerous.

Alimanescu worked at a jewelry theft which took place in the city of Sinaia. He discoverd that the thieves were Soviet Army officers (at that time, Soviet Army occupied Romania). He convoked these men "for a discussion" and shot them. In 1951, he was arrested. In 1958, he was assassinated. Some sources say he was "executed", other sources say he was killed during a transfer to a prison. He was throwed from the train who transported him. Officialy, was "attempt to escape".
