is an anthology movie (portmanteau) composed of three stories centred on selfish and very greedy women as main characters. The first, "Mimi o kamitagaru onna" (The Woman Who Seems to Want to Nibble Ears) is directed by Yasuzô Masumura, and played mainly by Ayako Wakao (Kimi, the woman who etc.) and Hiroshi Kawaguchi (Tabata, wealthy heir of an industrial). Kimi spends her time in tricking men, not according what they long for but taking in an unfair exchange their money she invests in the company owned by one of her would-be lover, ageing industrialist, whose son she is in love with, and teasing the same way. The romance between the two youngsters, possible at a moment, will fail. The second, "Mono o takaku uritsukeru onna" (The Woman Who Sells at a High Price), has Kon Ichikawa for metteur en scène. Fujiko Yamamoto (Tsuneko) and Eiji Funakoshi (Yasushi) are the protagonists, with Hitomi Nozoe for a bit part in the end. A depressed popular writer meets a mysterious lady (one think to the princess in Ugetsu monogatari) by the see, who let him follow her to her mansion. Struck by her charm and appearent distress, he wants to help her and buy the house. But things are not what they seem to be. On more than one level. The third story, "Koi o wasurete ita onna" (The Woman Who Forgot Love), directed by Kôzaburô Yoshimura, is played by Machiko Kyô (Omitsu), Junko Kanô (Yumiko) and Jun Negishi (Kanemitsu). Socially active but lonely, a hotel owneress (Machiko Kyô) runs her business with an inflexible greed, whatever happens around her (her sister-in-law going to be married, a kid having been struck by a three-wheeler, all is good to make money or keep it safe). But one night, an old flame of hers (her only love) is back and begs for help. She breaks down, provides money and security to come, just before the police irrupts and arrests the guy. But the event triggers something in her and she changes her ways, dramatically. Three stories based on a loosely same character, three women stubbornly greedy, though their ages are spanning from about 20 to around 40. But three ways for the development and the ending: the young semi-whore will part from her lover and continue her scheme; the lady who was not what she pretended to be will find in her victim someone at her measure, and they'll reach to an agreement; the lonely heart will find that being good while being wealthy is a proper way to behave. Also three ways to tell the story, though the most disturbing and somehow clumsy in the filming and editing is Ichikawa's middle section. But one way to show: the best. The acting is great, Ayako Wakao, Fujiko Yamamoto, and Machiko Kyô are impressive. The rest of the cast is level with them. The music and the cinematography (Setsuo Kobayashi, Hiroshi Murai, Kazuo Miyakawa) are very fine. It was a great pleasure to watch this gem. I forgot to say that the writing credits go to Toshio Yasumi, based on Shôfû Muramatsu's novel (or short stories?). -- Last edit: 2016-01-28 21:49:27 |
