![]() ![]() Taken from ![]() We Live in Two Worlds 2-DVD set and second volume (of 3) of shorts from The GPO Film Unit, covering the period 1936-1938. Nothing in imdb and I can't find an online copy, but http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/1301278/index.html refers. 12 minute film about the GPO's role in providing communications links so everyone can follow the major sporting events of summer 1938. Warms up with a cobbled-together feature on Len Hutton's record-breaking cricket score of 364 in the Test match against Australia - England declared on 903-7 and won by an innings and 579 runs with Hutton's innings lasting for more than 13 hours, with 847 balls faced. It was the longest in first-class cricket at the time and the highest individual score in a Test until Garfield Sobers scored 365 in 1958; it still today remains the 6th highest in Tests and is the most runs scored in an innings by an English player. A bit of footage included but brief without much context - instead it focuses on his home in Pudsey (Leeds) and his mum and family/neighbours listening to the commentary on t'wireless. ![]() ![]() The main content is the 1938 Isle of Man TT ![]() ![]() and how the GPO (co-ordinated from Liverpool but using local PO Telephones equipment - seems IoM was part of UK organisation, not independent) set up all the communications - commentary posts around the course, telephone and radio links, telegrams etc. A fair bit of race footage but commentary very vague about who/what/results etc, and I suspect might be mixing and matching different events within the weekend's schedule. Rejects - vans on Isle of Man ![]() ![]() - Test match at the Oval ![]() - lots of bikes (but don't worry, there'll be lots of entries as well). The problem is GPO still getting the hang of panning shots for fast moving things so only a few frames stay in focus with the rest too blurred to capture usefully ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (#37 seen twice at different points in film) ![]() |
