Right Sunbar, a Panhard et Levassor 1901 indeed! In Bernard Vermeylen's book "Panhard & Levassor - entre tradition et modernité" is a picture of this very car when new... It's a Tonneau 12CV [M4F] sold in the UK.

Dear All

Please note the vehicle pictured is an 1899 Panhard et Levassor 6HP, bodied by Vincents of Reading.

I am certain of this as it was imported by my Great Uncle, Mr Edward Jarvis of Jarvis Limited, 205 Edgware Road, London. It was registered when the law required it in 1904 under Reg No: H786. It originaly was blue but was restored and painted red in 1932. It has remained in our family ever since and completed the last London to Brighton run.

It is currently stored in my brothers garage near Brighton and we would love contact from anyone who may have more information, pictures, documents to complement its history.

We would very much like to get a copy of this footage, can anyone help?

Kind regards

Barry Gibbins

Thanks a lot for your information, Barry! It is really very interesting to hear that the car still exists and is still in the family! In the above mentioned book I found that Panhard & Levassor built 266 6CV [M2F] in 1899, of which three were exported... The 6CV was built from 1896 till 1902.

Hello Barry, the best advice I can give is to contact the BBC/Open University http://www.open2.net/nationonfilm/selling_cars.html

The original documentary was probably shown in early 2007 and could be repeated at sometime on BBC2 or BBC4.

Hi

My Great Uncle, Edward Jarvis ordered 3 Panhards in 1897 but the above car was not delivered until September of 1899 and finally was bodied and delivered in December of that year. I don't know when/if the other two arrived.

There is loads more on the history of the car if people are interested please let me know!

Regards

Barry

I believe the film clip dates from the late 1920s, probably around 1927.

It was a home-movie of a veteran car run in the south of England, possibly Ramsgate I think, but I could be wrong as it was a year ago. I watched it a number of times so remember it quite well. I only retained the recording of the programme for a short time before re-using the disc.

Dear All

Many thanks for your comments.

One other point I noticed from the photo, the car is not carrying its side lamps? If you would like to see how she looks today there is a good picture from the start of last years London to Brighton run which can be found at: Link to "www.lbvcr.com"

Just a side note but in the 1932 London to Brighton run you will find the Panhard et Levassor, H786 as being recorded as the first car to arrive in Brighton! Not bad as its the 6hp model.

On the above comments I believe Panhard et Levassor only supplied this rolling chassis with the 6hp Phenix (Daimler) engine up to 1899? Anybody got any more information on this?

I am trying to get the clip but I know the car was used in the film Genevieve, can someone help? In addition it was in "My Old Dutch" filmed in 1934, again some help please!

Many thanks

Hi Barry,

This may be a little off topic, but you mentioned "Vincents of Reading" -- could you give me more information about this firm?

Thank you,
Bruno

J M Turner was my Uncle John I have pictures of him driving the Panhard in the film...pictures taken at the making of the film ? From memory the car was last seen at the rear of a garage, may be owned by his son in Walton on Thames,JM related the times he was successful in motor sport events over many years
After retirement from the motor trade,JM retired to Peacehaven Nr Brighton I can well remember him taking me to Brighton to see the cars arrive in the late 50's
