Very nice thumbnails with the details of the dashboard. Curiously, the radio is not a Becker and I suppose this one it's British made.

In several books about this car (namely written in German) it is written than red was not available as a solid colour with the hardtop but only with the latter in white or black !
I would like to read a connesseur's comment.
Thank you.

If you look in the pictures you can see that the hubcaps are in fact white, which would have only been the case if the roof was also initially white from the factory. It's likely hat for the movie, it was decided that it was either too visually distracting to have the different colors or that the white didn't show up well under the nighttime lighting for the scene. They may have repainted it red for this reason. In Stanley Donen's next movie Two for the Road, the car is seen again with the same registration (and remained his personal car) so it looks like the body and roof returned to white (maybe they borrowed a red hardtop for the other film!) I've heard that this was because Audrey Hepburn hated red cars, but this could be entirely apocryphal! Again, most likely because the white showed up well and offered good contrast in the bright south of France daylight film shooting in this movie..

It would be nice if someone can see if the registration still belongs to this right hand drive Mercedes and indeed if it is still on the road. If so, it is certainly the most cinematically important Mercedes Pagoda in existence!

But in answer to electra225, yes the car would have clearly been red with white hubcaps and hardtop from the factory, since hubcaps were always color coded to the hardtop as standard and most red cars came with these items in either white or black to contrast the red body. In theory you could have special ordered any combination, but it is extremely unlikely that Director Stanley Donen chose to order a red car with just white hubcaps lol.
