An apparent prototype Vauxhall Astra which was running on a new type of diesel - it was subsequently rammed into accidentally by Richard's tractor. |

Even if it is a prototype, I think that such car could be listed as hatchback as the body is the normal one: it is only different inside. |

Yes. More a modified production vehicle than a prototype I would say. By the way, the K registration confirms a local 'Luton' registration even though only the Vauxhall administration office (and parts warehouse) remain in Luton. |

There are a number of possibilities why the DVLA details would show petrol rather than diesel (heavy oil). Assuming the details were correct when the car was built and registered possibly they were not changed after the diesel engine was fitted or the engine reverted back to petrol after the programme was made. I think it unlikely however and unless there was good reason to use a petrol car they are more likely to have started with a normal diesel in the first place. I did not see the programme but the reason I think that could explain it was that they substituted another car for filming. If the diesel engine was fitted in an actual development car it was possibly not suitable for filming. These cars are very often rolling test-beds which internally have trim or even complete seats removed to allow test equipment to be fitted. The programme makers were possibly allowed to drive the actual diesel car but for filming they were loaned a standard production Astra to make a point about new engine developments. -- Last edit: 2007-02-28 12:26:20 |

Probably a made-up story to heighten the drama. |
