PMP 973 was Middlesex issue Oct 39 onwards to War Department. Commentary says these six-wheelers are Crossleys. Millions more in the film as part of the mega-convoy north

There are a lot of detail differences, but I'm assuming they're all the same type. Note one shot of a door with stencil saying 20mph (so the trip north must have been incredibly slow) and the shot of a tailboard on EMG 291 saying Payload 3 tons. Number plates seen include EMG 291 (Sept 36 onwards, again Middlesex issue to War Department), HHX 968 (Oct 37 onwards, ditto), JMG 79 and 368 (May 38 onwards, ditto), and RMC 225 (Nov 38 onwards, ditto).

20mph was the overarching speed limit for all heavy lorries of over three tons unladen weight until well post WW2 (actually 1st May 1957). I have clear memories of being stuck behind lorries with "20" plates on the back, while Dad cursed the lack of acceleration of the Morris Ten, or even the Citroen traction avant which followed it as the family transport..

Extract from Hansard Feb 1957 discussing increasing 20mph limit to 30mph.

IGL 3? The example shown in the main picture seems to be fitted with Gruss air springs to the front axle, possibly the RAF used the vehicle for the transportation of delicate electronic equipment and wished to reduce the harshness of the ride.

IGL stands for "Indian Government Lorry" - in 1923 the Government of India issued a specification for a basic 30cwt vehicle. To meet this the 25/30 type engine was mounted into a chassis that had been designed for an order from the Russian government that never materialised because of the Revolution.

From the mid 1930s re-armament of the British forces started and Crossley again became heavily involved with supplying both its previous major customer the Royal Air Force and also the British army. The orders were mainly satisfied by the IGL3 truck which had been supplied since 1928. The IGL would go through a series of further versions designated IGL4, 6, 7 and 8 for the army. The RAF versions were all normal control and all called IGL3. - http://www.crossley-motors.org.uk/history/military.html . RAF had about 700 IGL3s.
