Silver Wraith??

Silver Dawn Standard Steel Saloon.

It's very difficult to see the bonnet shut lines, but I don't think that this is a " converted" Bentley. It looks in need of some adjustment to the front bumper irons, hopefully the misalignment does not extend to the chassis. The two fixing bolts securing the bumper iron to the chassis rail on the right of the car as you look at it are probably loose and have allowed the bumper to droop on that side. Place a pad of some sort on the screw jack supplied with the car in order to protect the chrome, and use the jack to level the bumper - gently - tighten the bolts and replace the jack in its location in the boot. If this doesn't work, you've got problems.

6000 W was issued March-Oct 60 in Sheffield - no trace now and too new to be original for car.

Not quite.....
There were two versions of the bodywork, small boot and large boot, and two versions of the engine, 4257 and 4566 cc in line with the Mk VI and R-type Bentleys, changing in July 1951. The bodies changed in the third quarter of 1952. "Rolls-Royce policy is one of continuous improvement."

Whereas the Bentley had twin SU carburettors the Royce had to make do with a single Stromberg, later Zenith, instrument, and could not quite match the 100mph Bentley's performance. Left hand drive cars had a steering column gear change but as most of these had automatic transmission it didn't matter so much.

Please?

Why made for US? Just because films are filmed in certain countries does not automatically mean a ‘Made for’ tag. There has to be differences (LHD/RHD) does not qualify.

(only if name is different from original one, or if there are visible changes other than LHD/RHD).

Now experts on Rolls Royce....is this US spec? I’m really sick of these ‘Made for’ tags. I wish we could get rid of them or change the way we document it. So many ‘Made for’ comments that are, in my opinion, Unproductive.

This is what I was talking about. What is it supposed to be? Should this be an official contract? Should it be officially sold there? Should there be some unique specifications? No one answered anything to that.

Will you please stop squawking “Made for USA”.

It wasn’t.

From what I understand it has to unique specifications (i.e tail lamp differences, side markers, different mirrors ( japan has some on the hood), different head lamps, head lamp washers and more I’m sure). These specifications are different then the original market it was sold in.

Now the grey area is black market imports....as in Russia. We do not know where those vehicles were originally sold so normally a ‘made for’ tag does not occur. Mexico is similar as they have a plethora of US spec vehicles.

A close inspection of the space above the bonnet, (this car is not fitted with a “hood“), behind the windscreen, under the radio aerial will reveal a steering wheel, on the right of the car looking forwards. The windscreen wipers are parked on the left side of the scuttle, to suit a car with the steering wheel on the right, although my Bentley gives you the ability to park them where you wish as the self park mechanism has been replaced by a switch.

There is therefore a strong chance that this car was built for U.K., but since I also consider the “made for” to be a waste of rations I ain’t gonna ask.

Made for USA indeed!

Even in this four years newer photograph, the car retains its U.K. spec headlamps and Lucas spotlamps, not to mention a very rhd steering wheel.

I can never love whitewall tyres, but grey walls are a good compromise! Those appear to be original wheel trims, but the outers seem to have been plated. Awkward on Aluminium!

It seems to be a very nicely kept old car, and, believe me, I know where to look for the manky bits.

Finally, this image confirms the the car is a genuine Silver Dawn, not a converted Bentley, and a large boot model for sure in 1954.

The Royce appears to have been exported as a used car.

My Bentley was made in 1953, I know its complete history, it has been owned by people within 40 miles of my house for its entire existence, and with me here for the last 36 years.

Were I to sell it to an American, and ship it over, are you suggesting that it should be classified as “Made for USA”?

My apologies for the comment about my car’s history, which I had made due to completely missing your point.

I’m only part way into a bottle of Chilean Malbec, it usually takes longer.

Maybe the management might clarify, or scarify, the “Made for” thing.

At no point should a RHD Rolls Royce be Made for USA.

Basically, the rule was always that the tag was to be used for when there was some kind of difference to styling or features (i.e. US/CDN market cars that had different bumpers or headlights) or where a vehicle had a different name in a particular market. This makes sense, is useful for reference and was relatively uncontroversial.

There was then some discussion behind the scenes about some wider usage where the tags would be useful (export flows etc) which became controversial but had some productive ideas come out of it. The issue now is that there are a couple of users who seem to want to apply it to everything everywhere because it gives them something to comment on. Too much of this has eroded the original purpose of the tags at this point.

As is obvious it's causing a lot of issues now, so we're going to have to do something. Not sure there is the will towards getting rid of them (for me it would definitely solve the issue), what I can see is us looking at limiting the accounts of the users most guilty of made-for spamming, however.
