UVB 652 was a Jan 59 plate. Footage taken from 8-minute 1969 British Transport Films "Motorsport Tries Motorail" feature - "the London & Torbay Motor Clubs compete for the 'Motorail Trophy' over 4-5 May 1968. The London club members are filmed travelling with their cars by train down to Newton Abbott, and competing against the Torbay club members ...." - from Link to "autoshite.com" some way down the page with lots of very good screen grabs. I've nicked this additional picture from there Some of their thread comments "this is a very odd damper setup: Austin 7-based, but split axle? I thought it might be a Leslie Ballamy conversion, but after a swift Google I'm not so sure... " "The red thing with the unusual front axle looks to me like an Alexis trials car...." but I think their searches got no further (unless it's much later in the thread). The silver thing immediately behind is a real weirdo and worth a bit of off-piste discussion, again using their photos (as not included in "my" film) "Nicknamed the 'Brain Hemorrhage' and driven by Morris Bishop. Check out the 4 wheel steering" "The 'brain hemorrhage' is actually called the MoBi One and was at one point part of the Mike Wilsdon collection. Period images of it are VERY rare indeed so knowing it exists on this bit of film is a bit of a scoop!" And finally, in case anyone's worried, I did notice the Imp behind but it's never shown properly in "my" film. However, here it is on the return journey - an early 1968 Sunbeam Imp Sport -- Last edit: 2015-09-22 04:54:15 |

It is possible that this is a Cannon rather than an Alexis, but I am not expert in these trials irons by a long way. Scroll down to the end, and then back two pictures to see two VERY famous men in a Cannon, then another one discussing them. If you look at the picture of RPD 4, the front suspension is of a similar, but not identical, style. http://www.hsta.co.uk The front suspension above looks Austin Seven, the Hartford type friction dampers replaced with an hydraulic item. It isn't Ballamy, the front axle is not split and the front wheels are still connected each to the other by the beam. The front brakes appear to have been converted to hydraulic, and the rear wheels could be Morris Ten-Four. http://www.prewarcar.com/classifieds/ad172773.html http://www.fordspecials.co.uk/ballamy.html The other vehicle has distinct signs of Mini ancestry, probably a Mini front subframe at each end and a home made linkage to achieve the rear wheel steering. Further digging has produced a line drawing of Cuth Harrison's ( of T C Harrison fame ) Harford showing similar suspension damping on a Ford Popular axle. http://www.hsta.co.uk/page7.html http://www.tch.co.uk -- Last edit: 2015-09-21 18:20:16 |

UVB 652 reused from /vehicle.php?id=1049140 (lots more photos there). The silver thing immediately behind is now resolved as 1967 MoBi One 'Brain Haemorrhage' - /vehicle.php?id=1049149 and /vehicle.php?id=855978 in a different bit of archive footage. |
